MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced Tuesday the signing of defenseman Joe Stejskal to a two-year contract (2011-12 to 2012-13). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Stejskal will report to the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs.

Stejskal has registered five points (3 goals and 2 assists) and served 37 penalty minutes in 33 games this season with the NCAA’s Dartmouth College Big Green.

The 22-year old played with the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks (high school) from 2004-05 to 2006-07. He led the Thunderhawks to consecutive state playoffs in 2006 and 2007. As team captain in his last season, Stejskal led the club’s defensemen in scoring with 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) and was the recipient of the Herb Brooks Award, awarded to the most qualified hockey player in the state tournament who strongly represents the values, characteristics, and traits that defined Herb Brooks.

Stejskal was the Canadiens sixth pick (fifth round, 133rd overall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. He participated in the Canadiens last four Development Camps (2007 to 2010), and in the team’s last three Rookie Camps (2008 to 2010).
