All Habs Headlines: Wednesday January 12, 2018
On this day in hockey history…

1918— Montreal’s Joe Malone scored five times (to become the first 20 goal scorer in NHL history) as the Canadiens won 9-4 over Ottawa.

1981— Montreal Canadiens became the first NHL team to have four different goaltenders get shutouts in one season, when rookie Richard Sevigny picked up the first of his NHL career in a 5-0 win over Edmonton, at the Forum.

  • Ales Hemsky returned to practice wearing a non-contact jersey.
  • Shea Weber has a lower body injury.
  • Victor Mete has returned from Canada’s World Junior team.

► Price’s rising star

  • Carey Price has been named to represent Montreal at the All-Star game to be held on January 27 in Tampa Bay.
  • This is Price’s sixth All-Star appearance.

► Big Cubano headed to the oil patch

  • Al Montoya returned to practice in Montreal with his team for the first time to kick off 2018. A few days later Montoya was packing his bags and heading to Edmonton in return for a conditional 2018 fourth round pick. If Montoya plays fewer than seven games this season, the return is a 2018 fifth round pick.

► Ferraro is dumbfounded

  • Following Marc Bergevin’s bizarre mid-season press conference, TSN analyst Ray Ferraro was asked to weigh in on the Mikhail Sergachev for Jonathan Drouin trade and the related general manager’s comments.
  • Given that the Canadiens traded their number one prospect for a player who didn’t address their number one need, Ferraro said, “It made no sense, zero.”
  • After acknowledging that Drouin is vastly underachieving this season, Ferraro said that he was “blown away” that Bergevin acknowledged in the presser that his 22-year-old forward didn’t belong at centre.
  • Ferraro wondered aloud how much Drouin’s first language factored into Bergevin’s pursuit of the player.

► Habs family grows by one

  • Andrew Shaw and his wife Chaunette Boulerice have announced they will be adding another member to their family. Their baby is due in July 2018.
  • Congratulations to the Shaw family from the All Habs Hockey Magazine family.

► Olympic dreams

  • Former Habs captain Brian Gionta and defenceman James Wisnewski have been named to Team USA for the Pyeongchang games.
  • Team Canada has added four former Canadiens: Maxim Lapierre, Rene Bourque, Ben Scrivens and Christian Thomas.

► Deslauriers gets rewarded

  • Nicolas Deslauriers has won the Molson Cup for December. His play, along with Daniel Carr, has been what was needed to revive the fourth line.

► Surgery for analyst

  • TSN and NBC analyst Pierre McGuire has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. McGuire has had surgery to remove a tumor. Following recovery, McGuire will return to cover the Winter Olympics next month for NBC.

► 2017 was a good year for one member of the Canadiens

  • Chris Terry had a great 2017 and is still leading the way for the Rocket. Terry currently leads AHL scoring with 41 points.

► Lernout on the Metro

      • Brett Lernout’s metro pass is getting a workout over the last month as he is sent back to Laval again.

► Weber injury update

      • Shea Weber not expected to return until after the All Star break. So not an update on his injury wasn’t given but a timeline has been

► Primeau goaltending

      • Northeastern University freshman and #Habs goaltending prospect Cayden Primeau was named December’s NCAA Div1 rookie of the month

  1. It’s sad sad sad what the Habs have become. Been a serious fan since I was 5, sitting on dads knee listening on the radio – now 65 land wondering what happened to the Flying Frenchmen.
    Need a new GM (French or English) whoever is the best. Remember the old days.
