Without the pressure of making the playoffs, they are playing much better. Oh, and it helped that the Senators are a work in progress. Being loose means that Brendan Gallagher and Tomas Tatar do a little rock, paper, scissors on the bench with the winner earning the right to take the next shift. When’s the last time you saw that in an NHL game? What about Carey Price stepping in when Ben Chiarot and Brady Tkachuk were engaged in a scuffle? The Canadiens goaltender received a two-minute minor for roughing. Yes, roughing. Price was dominant in this game, making 30 saves for his fourth shutout of the season and the 48th in his career. And when is the last time you saw Karl Alzner in a Canadiens jersey? Period. Alzner last played for the Habs on January 10, 2019 in St. Louis. It was a solid performance by Alzner who had two shots on goal, one hit, one blocked shot and was a plus-one in just over 16 minutes of icetime. Players didn’t even have to be in the lineup to be in fine form tonight. When a Twitter user took aim at Keith Kinkaid, reminding him that emergency backup goaltender David Ayres has the same number of wins this season as does the former Canadiens backup. Kinkaid succinctly responded, “Nice man, how many do you have?”
Entering the last week of February, the Canadiens will have three home games hosting the Canucks, Rangers and Hurricanes. But before that all eyes will turn to Marc Bergevin and what he will be able to accomplish prior to the NHL Trade Deadline on Monday afternoon.
