And why not? The Leafs are a top-ten team in the league with the third best offence and the top power-play. As we painfully know, the Canadiens have owned the last place spot in the NHL for most of the season. They rank 32nd in both offence and defence and are near the bottom of the league in both special teams categories. But this is one of the best rivalries in the NHL and a Saturday night game at the Bell Centre is always a marquee matchup for these two teams regardless of the standings. Auston Matthews opened the scoring only 36 seconds into the contest and the rout was on. Or was it? The Maple Leafs thoroughly dominated the first and third periods. In those two periods, shots on goal were 36-6 for Toronto. The Canadiens couldn’t cope with the speed of play by the Leafs. The shot spread in this game was historic.
The best period for Montreal was the middle frame. Shots were close and the Habs scored twice including a goal on the power-play. This night belonged to Jake Allen. With his team under siege, Allen fended off the Leaf attack. And at the other end of the ice, the Toronto troubles in goal continue. Up NextTyler Pitlick and Michael Pezzetta each left the game early with upper-body injuries and did not return. The head out on a four-game road trip with their first stop in New Jersey with a game against the Devils on Sunday night.
