Some quick final thoughts from the Garden:
– Undoubtedly one of the most entertaining games on Causeway Street in a while. There’s an old hockey saying that goes, “Forecheck, backcheck, paycheck,” and the Bruins did the first two quite well, and then cashed in when it counted most.
– The crowd — on both sides — earns high marks here. Looking back on tonight’s entries, I saw my esteemed colleague Fluto Shinzawa (thanks for lending me this space for tonight, Flutes) estimate the crowd as “half Habs.” I think that’s a bit generous, but we’re splitting hairs. Fact is, there were a ton of Montreal fans here, and they were loud and proud. But, the Bruins contingent drowned out the “Ole, Ole” and “Go Habs Go.” “It was great, especially when you looked around at the beginning and saw a lot of Montreal fans, they tried to take it over. Our fans stood tall and wouldn’t let them,” said B’s coach Claude Julien. “We let them know that this was our building, not theirs.”
“Yeah, they’ve been cheering pretty good for them, but our crowd was sensational tonight too,” said Marc Savard. “Every time they got on Z (Chara), the cheers out-did the boos there. Hopefully they can continue to do this on Tuesday for us.”
When asked if it felt like the old Garden, Montreal coach Guy Carbonneau said: “Not at all. I don’t remember (playing in the old Garden) and having that many fans from Montreal. They didn’t have the courage to wear their jersey here, at the old Garden.”
