TSN (Darren Dreger):
Mats Sundin and his agent JP Barry met with Toronto Maple Leafs interim general manager Cliff Fletcher Thursday night in Toronto.
Toronto was trying to get a feel for what the Leafs’ captain is thinking in terms of his future before he returns to Sweden for the summer.
Sources say Sundin advised Fletcher he planned to take a few weeks before making his decision on what route to take.
The 37-year-old centreman is believed to be considering three options:
1) Re-signing with the Maple Leafs providing he approves of management and the new head coach.
2) Exploring the market as an unrestricted free agent and entertaining a predicted flurry of offers, likely to include Montreal, Detroit and the New York Rangers, teams some consider to have a slight edge.
3) Retirement.
Sundin refused to waive his no-trade contract at the deadline as Fletcher and the Leafs attempted to peddle him in an effort to expedite the rebuilding process.
Last season, Sundin led the Leafs in scoring with 32 goals and 46 assists for 78 points in 74 games.
