MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the signings of forwards Stefan Chaput and Erik Nyström.
Chaput, 25, signed a one-year, two-way American Hockey League / ECHL contract. The 6’0”, 192-pound forward spent the 2012-2013 season between the Hamilton Bulldogs and the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers. In 48 games with Hamilton, the Montreal, Quebec native recorded 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) and 25 penalty minutes. In 15 games with Wheeling, he notched nine points (three goals, six assists) and eight penalty minutes.
In 212 career regular season AHL games with the Albany River Rats, Charlotte Checkers, Syracuse Crunch, Providence Bruins and Hamilton Bulldogs, Chaput has accumulated 88 points (29 goals, 59 assists) and 76 penalty minutes. He was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fifth round, 153rd overall, in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Nyström, 19, signed a 25-game professional try out contract. The 5’11”, 176-pound forward spent the 2012-2013 season in Sweden, playing for MODO of J20 SuperElit (junior) and Karlskrona HK of HockeyAllsvenskan (professional). In 22 games with MODO, the Stockholm, Sweden native recorded 24 points (eight goals, 16 assists) and 32 penalty minutes. In 23 games with Karlskrona, he notched 11 points (five goals, six assists) and four penalty minutes.
Nyström represented Sweden at the 2013 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-20 Championship, registering one assist and no penalty minutes in five games. In 2011-2012, he played 19 games for MODO of the Swedish Elite League, recording two assists and no penalty minutes. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the sixth round, 154th overall, in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
