With the opening week in the books, the Canadiens took to the road for Week 2, beginning a four-game Western Conference tour on Wednesday night in Calgary. A bit of history haunted the Habs as they took to the ice in the Saddledome: they hadn’t won on the Flames’ home ice since 2002. And with a 3-2 final score favouring the home team it looks like Montreal fans will have to wait a little while longer to see their team break their Calgary losing streak. After not scoring in the first period, P.K. Subban fired a puck into the net after a nice feed from Max Pacioretty. The power play goal also gave Andrei Markov an assist, which was his 400th career NHL point. Lars Eller found the back of the net yet again, for an even-strength third period goal. However, ending the game on the penalty kill thanks to a bad late-period cross-checking penalty by Subban didn’t give the Habs the manpower they needed to make a comeback. In their first back-to-back game sequence of the year, Peter Budaj found himself in net as the Canadiens traveled to Edmonton the following night. Budaj played well, allowing only one goal by Ryan Smyth. The Canadiens were looking to redeem themselves from the previous night’s loss and, particularly, the young players. Brendan Gallagher kicked off the Habs scoring in the second period with a power-play goal, followed by an even-strength goal by Brandon Prust. The third period saw more pucks going Montreal’s way, with goals by Alex Galchenyuk and Pacioretty. (Read our full game recap here: Gally Leads Habs Past Oilers [WITH VIDEO])
The week wrapped up with a late-night tilt against the Vancouver Canucks. There’s certainly no shortage of Habs fans on the west coast, as the Rogers Centre was awash with many red jerseys and chants of “Carey! Carey!” could be heard ringing off the rafters. Carey Price was solid in net, making a number of outstanding saves. At the other end of the ice Roberto Luongo had a difficult evening, made even worse by an “own goal” scored by Lars Eller who dumped in the puck before heading to the bench on a penalty kill in the second period. Dan Hamhuis lost control of the puck behind the net and it trickled out toward Luongo where it bounced off of his skate and into his own net. Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec also potted power play goals and Josh Gorges rounded out the night with an even strength goal in the third period. The Canadiens have one more Western Conference game next week, taking on the Winnipeg Jets, before coming home to Montreal. 1st Star: P.K. Subban
The week didn’t start well with Subban taking two 3rd-period penalties that coach Therrien felt were costly in the loss to Calgary. But offensively, P.K. had a goal and five assists to lead the Habs offensively.
2nd Star: Alex Galchenyuk
Alex Galchenyuk continued his hot start with three more points to stay at the top of the league with six assists this season.
3rd Star: Max Pacioretty
Max Pacioretty finally got on track with two goals and an assist this week receiving a boost from new centre Lars Eller who had two goals.
