The week kicked off with a rare Sunday evening matchup at home against the New York Islanders.  The first period ended with no scoring from the Canadiens, but that changed quickly in the second period.  Brendan Gallagher scored first, followed by power play goals from both Lars Eller and Michael Bournival. Then it was Alex Galchenyuk‘s turn to put a puck into the net in the third period, giving him his first three-point game in his NHL career.  The Islanders were unable to mount a comeback, resulting in the Habs snapping a four-game losing streak by handing the Isles their fourth consecutive loss.  Final score: Canadiens, 4-2.  (Read our full game recap here: Slump-busting Habs Win Courtesy of Eller, Gallagher, Galchenyuk)

Next up, the Canadiens welcomed the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Bell Centre on Tuesday night.  The Lightning, despite playing without Steven Stamkos due to a broken ankle sustained the night before, pressured the Habs offensively and fired 45 shots on net.  But Carey Price was stellar yet again, stopping all but one of them.  The Canadiens remained scoreless for most of the game until Danny Briere deflected a shot into the net late in the third period to tie the game.  Neither team scored in overtime, forcing a shootout situation in which the home team was unable to score a goal.  Final score: Lightning, 2-1 (SO). Fast forward to another Friday night game, this time with the Habs taking to the road for a tilt in Columbus against the Blue Jackets.  After going down by two goals in the first period, Galchenyuk lit the lamp with just under eight seconds left in the opening period.  The “kid” line kept things going in the second period with another power play goal by Eller.  For the second time this week, this game would go to a shootout, however this one ended much differently.  Peter Budaj stopped all three Columbus shot attempts, and David Desharnais scored the shootout winner after being a healthy scratch in the previous game.  Final score: Canadiens, 3-2 (SO). The Habs returned home on Saturday night to take on the New York Rangers, in a game that turned out to be a story of goaltending.  Price was back in net and proved to be solid once more.  However, the offense in front of him didn’t provide any support against rookie goaltender Cam Talbot.  The defense wasn’t much better, allowing the team to be outshot 34-22.  The Rangers typically struggle when they visit the Bell Centre, but on this night the Canadiens allowed Talbot to tally his first NHL shutout.  Final score: Rangers, 1-0. The Canadiens now have off until Tuesday night, when they take on Minnesota Wild on home ice. Until then, we’ve got plenty of content to keep you busy reading about your favourite team! In case you missed them, here are a few fantastic articles published earlier this week:
