The week kicked off with a home game against the New Jersey Devils. With David Desharnais scratched because a bout with the flu, Michel Therrien chose to dress seven defensemen. Max Pacioretty scored his 20th goal of the season in the first period, but unfortunately it would be the only time the Canadiens would light the lamp for the rest of the game. Controversy arose when a goal by Brendan Gallagher was overturned after it was ruled that he kicked the puck into the net – most fans agreed that it was simply a deflection off the skate. On Thursday night the Canadiens made a short trip down the road to Ottawa to take on the Senators. Carey Price was the hero of the night, making one spectacular highlight reel save after another. He was actually quite busy in net, as the Sens outshot the Habs 44-23. The game started well for the visiting team, with Tomas Plekanec scoring a short-handed goal, Pacioretty with a power play goal, and Desharnais potting an even-strength goal. Ottawa fought back and, after another Plekanec goal in the third period, the Habs found themselves heading for overtime. P.K. Subban fired the winning goal into the back of the Ottawa net just 23 seconds into the extra period. Final score: Canadiens, 5-4 (OT). (Read our full recap here: Price for the Win)
The Habs continued their road trip on Saturday evening by heading to Toronto for a lively matchup against the Maple Leafs. Joonas Nattinen made his NHL debut with the team, but was only allowed two shifts. Nathan Beaulieu also found himself in the lineup on this night. A sluggish first period by the Habs defense didn’t help support a power play goal scored by Gallagher. Brian Gionta and Desharnais both scored in the second and third periods, respectively, but massive amounts of turnovers kept the Canadiens on their heels. Final score: Maple Leafs, 5-3.
