St. John’s, NF – The Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Toronto Marlies 4-3 in overtime at Mile One Centre in St. John’s, Newfoundland to win the inaugural Iceberg Cup. Yanick Lehoux scored two goals while David Desharnais was recognized as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Jeremy Williams notched his third goal of the tournament on the power play at 3:57 to open the game’s scoring. Williams released a blistering shot from the top of the circle that sailed over the glove of Hamilton starting netminder Cedrick Desjardins and into the top of the net. Tim Stapleton added a power-play goal at 12:50 for a 2-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Stapleton hammered a slapshot from the blueline that beat Desjardins on the inside post.
Hamilton responded with a goal at 14:51 from Lehoux. Toronto starting netminder Adam Munro made the initial save on a Frederic St-Denis shot but was caught out of position for the rebound and Lehoux knocked in the loose puck to cut Toronto’s lead to 2-1.
The ‘Dogs tied the game in the second stanza with a power-play goal from Olivier Latendresse. Latendresse scooped up a rebound before snapping the puck over the glove of Munro to knot the game 2-2 at 15:42.
Lehoux notched his second goal of the game at 6:07 of the final frame to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. Lehoux broke in alone on goal before rifling the puck past Munro and into the top of the goal.
With their net empty, the Toronto Marlies tied the game 3-3 on a goal by Stapleton with only 20 seconds remaining in the game. Scott Langdon sent the puck towards the net where Stapleton redirected the puck by Desjardins.
Following the completion of three periods, the game headed into extra minutes where Chad Anderson beat Munro at 3:54 of the overtime period to win the game and the Iceberg Cup. Desharnais earned an assist on the play, his second of the night and sixth point of the tournament.
