Former Detroit Red Wings great Steve Yzerman, the freshly minted executive director of Hockey Canada’s entry for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, is keeping a beady eye out for swift skating, versatile players and insists he won’t be afraid to think outside the usual hockey conventions in assembling Team Canada.

“I don’t necessarily subscribe to the theory of specialists. There’s no reason, with the depth Canada has, that every player on this team isn’t multidimensional, and probably playing in all situations on his team,” Yzerman said, adding, “Just going out and getting lots of points isn’t going to be enough, you’ve got to be responsible defensively. … I just think at this level we can have multidimensional players at every position.”

Yzerman will be flanked by Detroit general manager Ken Holland, St. Louis Blues vice-president of player personnel Doug Armstrong – who will take charge of the 2009 world championship team – and Edmonton Oilers president of hockey operations Kevin Lowe.
