Picks 11 to 20
NASHVILLE PREDATORS
11th pick : KASPERI KAPANEN (KalPa (Finland)). Right wing, shoots right, 5’11’’ 180 pounds. Season stats : 47 GP, 7 goals, 7 assists, 14 points and 10 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 13th overall by the International Scouting Service (ISS), 1st European by the Central Scouting Bureau (NHL CSB), 19th overall by Hockey Prospect and 13th overall in my rankings.
Earlier, I spoke about William Nylander and in the “son of” category, Kasperi Kapanen is no exception. He also inherited the talent of his father, former NHLer Sami, and will use his offensive creativity and his ability with the puck to be a constant threat. Predators like to add defensive forwards in their lineup but now it is time to add an electrifying one. Kapanen is miles away from a Selke Trophy nomination, but the NHL’s 20th best offense probably won’t complain.

ARIZONA COYOTES
12th pick : ALEX TUCH (National team development program (USHL)). Center, shoots right, 6’4’’ 213 pounds. Season stats : 26 GP, 13 goals, 19 assists, 32 points and 36 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 14th overall by the ISS, 12th north american by the NHL CSB, 11th overall by Hockey Prospect and 14th overall in my rankings.
Coyotes have drafted some really good young players in recent drafts, but if the future looks bright in the middle, with Domi and Samuelsson, they need depth on the wings. Alex Tuch can play center, but his speed and his strength will allow him to become a really good winger. He is able to score but can distribute the puck really well to his teammates. Tuch will add his touch to an offense that will need it.
NHL comparable : Ryan Johansen
WASHINGTON CAPITALS
13th pick : IVAN BARBASHEV (Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL)). Centrer, shoots left, 6’1’’ 190 pounds. Season stats : 48 GP, 25 goals, 43 assists, 68 points and 27 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 19th overall by the ISS, 18th North American by the NHL CSB, 13th overall by Hockey Prospect and 15th overall in my rankings.
Here’s a player who fits like a glove in the Capitals lineup. Barbashev is a pure product of the Russian hockey mentality. He’s a quick player with an excellent shot but he can pass the puck too. Something rare among Russians (stereotype alert). He blended really well in North America because of his forechecking and backchecking abilities. He also played well in the playoffs despite the early elimination of his team.
NHL comparable : Logan Couture
DALLAS STARS
14th pick : BRENDAN PERLINI (Niagara IceDogs (OHL)). Left wing, shoots left, 6’3’’ 205 pounds. Season stats : 58 GP, 34 goals, 37 assists, 71 points and 36 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 9th overall by the ISS, 8th North American by the NHL CSB, 20th overall by Hockey Prospect and 11th overall in my rankings.
Just like the Coyotes, the Stars have some problems on the wings and particularly the left wing. Perlini caught the eyes of some scouts this season because of his speed, his devastating shot and his versatility. Power forwards often take more time to develop, but well surrounded, it shouldn’t take too long before he cracks the lineup. Coach Lindy Ruff will be pleased by his style of play.
NHL comparable : Jeff Carter
DETROIT RED WINGS
15th pick : JARED MCCANN (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (OHL)). Center, shoots left, 6’1’’ 175 pounds. Season stats : 64 GP, 27 goals, 35 assists, 62 points and 51 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 17th overall by the ISS, 10th North American by the NHL CSB, 25th overall by Hockey Prospect and 21st overall in my rankings.
I’ll admit it, I don’t know what to think about this pick. It is probably too early to select McCann, due to a lack of offensive talent, but at the same time, his game in all three zones makes it a logical choice for Detroit. He will not be flashy, but he will be effective in all situations. If he can improve a little bit in offense, he’ll justify by himself this premature selection.
NHL comparable : Patrice Bergeron
COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS
16th pick : SONNY MILANO (National team development program (USHL)). Left wing, shoots left, 5’11’’ 185 pounds. Season stats : 25 GP, 14 goals, 25 assists, 39 points and 21 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 16th overall by the ISS, 16th North American by the NHL CSB, 12th by Hockey Prospect and 19th overall in my rankings.
With Jack Eichel, Sonny Milano was collecting points in the USHL and in the U.S. development program. Hhe has one of the fastest pair of hands of all the draft and an acceleration that allows him to distance his rivals easily. He can do anything with the puck and is a tremendous playmaker. It often looks like he has eyes in the back of the head. This is exactly the kind of player that the Blue Jackets will look for.
NHL comparable : Taylor Hall
PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
17th pick : DYLAN LARKIN (National team development program (USHL)). Center, shoots left, 6’1’’ 190 pounds. Season stats : 26 GP, 17 goals, 9 assists, 26 points and 24 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 15th overall by the ISS, 17th North American by the NHL CSB, 9th overall by Hockey Prospect and 12th overall in my rankings.
The Flyers are known to use their first round pick for forwards who have a lot of character and who are tough to contain. Dylan Larkin fits very well in this mentality. He plays a north-south game and he’s not afraid to skate into dangerous areas. Larkin’s often buzzing around the net and has a great offensive flair. He reminds me of James Van Riemsdyk, a former Flyers first-round pick.

MINNESOTA WILD
18th pick : KEVIN FIALA (HV71 (Sweden)). Left wing, shoots left, 5’10’’ 181 pounds. Season stats : 17 GP, 3 goals, 8 assists, 11 points and 10 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 20th overall by the ISS, 3rd European by the NHL CSB, 15th overall by Hockey Prospect and 16th overall in my rankings.
Fiala is a pure offensive threat with obvious qualities to crack the top 6 of any NHL team. He’s fast, agile and has impressive stick handling skills. The Swiss can pass or score, but it’s his creativity with the puck that makes him a valuable asset in a team. He can do anything with the puck. Just like a lot of gifted players, he needs to learn how to play in the defensive zone, but at his young age, it’s not a problem yet.
NHL comparable : Jordan Eberle
TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING
19th pick : TRAVIS SANHEIM (Calgary Hitmen (WHL)). Defenseman, shoots left, 6’4’’ 205 pounds. Season stats : 67 GP, 5 goals, 24 assists, 29 points and 14 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 30th overall by the ISS, 53rd North American by the NHL CSB, 16th overall by Hockey Prospect and 32nd overall in my rankings.
This could be my longshot of the first round. Canadiens fans have witness, during the playoffs, that the Lightning defense had a lot of flaws. It won’t improve with aging Matthias Ohlund and Eric Brewer. That’s the reason why I believe they will choose a big defenseman with their first pick. Sanheim rose in the rankings near the end of the junior season. Mostly because of his work defensively, thanks to his long range. From what I’ve seen, he looks pretty mobile and keeps things simple, but he’s one of those big defenders who often raises some questions about their development.
NHL comparable : Marc Staal
SAN JOSE SHARKS
20th pick : DAVID PASTRNAK (Sodertalje (Sweden)). Right wing, shoots right, 6’0’’ 167 pounds. Season stats : 36 GP, 8 goals, 16 assists, 24 points and 24 penalty minutes.
Rankings : 5th European by the NHL CSB, 17th overall by Hockey Prospect and 22nd overall in my rankings.
Some analysts an draft lovers have mixed feelings towards David Pastrnak. Some think he will be called earlier, others don’t. Personally, I liked what I saw at the World under 18 and under 20 championships. He seems to be a spectacular player who, despite his frail size, finds a way to make big plays. He has a great shot and knows how to put the puck in the back of the net. I like his offensive skills and I think the Sharks could benefit from it on the right wing.
NHL comparable : David Perron
