The Rochester Americans defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs 6-5 at Blue Cross Arena on Sunday evening. The Bulldogs cut the lead to one goal but were unable to score the game-tying goal late in the third period and the Americans held on for the win.
The Bulldogs opened the game’s scoring with a goal at 1:12 of the first frame. David Desharnais raced down the left wing before he sent a pass right onto the stick of Mike Glumac. Glumac ripped a shot that beat Rochester starting goaltender Mike Brodeur. With the assist, Desharnais increased his point streak to nine games.
The Americans tied the game 1-1 with a power-play marker at 9:44 of the opening stanza. Karl Stewart received the puck from Jason Garrison before firing a shot that snuck through the pads of Hamilton starting goaltender Cedrick Desjardins.
Yanick Lehoux regained the lead for the ‘Dogs at 12:35 of the first period. Lehoux grabbed a loose puck before burying a shot past Brodeur. Rochester tied the game again at 14:38 of the opening frame. Desjardins stopped a shot by Michael Caruso but could not control the rebound. Shawn Matthias grabbed the rebound before backhanding the puck past Desjardins.
The ‘Dogs regained their one goal lead before Rochester tied the game for the third time in the first stanza. Desharnais shovelled a loose puck over Brodeur at 17:16 to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. At 19:42, Garrison blasted a shot that bounced through traffic and over Desjardins to tie the game 3-3.
Loic Lacasse replaced Cedrick Desjardins to start the second period.
Shawn Matthias scored his second goal of the game on the power play at 4:16 to give Rochester their first lead of the game. Cory Murphy hammered a shot that bounced off the back boards and onto the stick of Matthias. Matthias fired a shot over the shoulder of Lacasse. The Amerks took a 5-3 lead at 16:13 while on the power play. At the top of the face-off circle, Murphy blasted a shot right past Lacasse.
Following the goal, Cedrick Desjardins returned to the net to replace Loic Lacasse.
Rochester added its sixth goal at 7:31 of the final frame. Matthias fed the puck to Stefan Meyer who snapped a shot past Desjardins.
Lehoux added his second goal of the night on the power play at 12:15 of the third stanza. The Bulldogs kept constant pressure on the Americans before Lehoux fired a puck past Brodeur. Steve Gainey pulled the ‘Dogs to within one goal at 13:39 of the third stanza. Ryan Russell sent a pass to Dan Jancevski, who fed a pass to Gainey. Gainey redirected the puck past Brodeur to make the game 6-5.
