On this day in hockey history… 1969 — Jean Beliveau scored at 31:28 for the only overtime goal of his playoff career to give Montreal a 2-1 victory at Boston.  1989 — Kings’ Wayne Gretzky scored his 86th career playoff goal, making him the #1 playoff goal scorer in NHL history.  1999 — Patrick Roy became the first goalie in NHL history to win 100 playoff games, as the Colorado Avalanche beat the Sharks 3-1 at San Jose.

► Championship for Frolunda, Lehkonen

► No Cause For Concern

  • Baring major transactions that shake the Canadiens to the point of a new identity, the 2016-’17 Canadiens season will hang heavily on the shoulders of Carey Price, and according to a specialist, you should have no concern on if he can do it.
  • Richard Labbé of LaPresse interviewed orthopedic surgeon Jason Smith to discuss the probability that the league’s top net minder will return to his magical Hart Trophy-winning form from a season ago.
  • “What you need to understand,” he told the newspaper, “is that in the vast majority of cases, injuries to the [MCL] tend to heal completely. That’s the norm. It’s one of the ligaments that heals the best, and when it happens, it heals to 100 per cent.”
  • When questioned on the possibility of Price being able to still have a long career and return to his old form, Smith said, “Without a doubt. […] Generally, that type of injury doesn’t put an end to careers.”

► I Can’t Wait Until July 1st

  • Only 46 more days. Only 46 more days until all this P.K. Subban talk dies down and we can all enjoy the summer. Elliotte Friedman confirmed Marc Bergevin will be listening to offers. Listening.
  • Originally transcribed by Chris Nicols, Elliote Friedman was on Sportsnet 960, speaking on the possibility the Canadiens star blueliner will be dealt.
  • “I think they’re going to listen. I do. I don’t know that they’re going to do it, but I think they’re going to listen. To me, there’s two things that stand in the way. Number one, I do think that Marc Bergevin knows his defense is really weak without Subban.”
  • “The second thing is, what is Geoff Molson’s position on this. He was the guy who stepped in during an arbitration case and said, ‘We’re getting a deal done.’”
  • He continued saying, “You have to be able to say that a) this trade makes sense for us, and our fans will understand it, and b) you have to be able to know that you are bringing in somebody who is going to be able to handle it. The backlash initially will be severe.”

► Lundqvist on Price

  • As was mentioned during an article written by J.F. Chaumont of Le Journal de Montreal, Henrik Lunqvist has never suffered any serious knee injuries however he feels for the Canadiens most ascendant player.
  • “With the butterfly style, you constantly go down on his knees and it is a sudden and not necessarily natural movement. When you lose a little strength, you also lose the small fraction of a second you have to stop the puck or not,” said Lundqvist.
  • The former Vezina trophy winner was asked if he deviated from his routine when it came to his equipment following his comparatively trivial injuries saying, “Since my problems with my knees, I tied my pads tighter. I had more rotation in my knees than my feet.”

► Speculation that Habs Wouldn’t Have Drafted Yakupov

  • Following his request of a trade out of Edmonton, many rumours have been bandied about Nail Yakupov’s possible connection to Montreal. But, according to former NHL referee and longtime radio broadcaster Ron Fournier, Yakupov wouldn’t be with the Canadiens had they had the opportunity to draft him.
  • Fournier also went on to say that even had Alex Galchenyuk been selected prior to Yakupov, the Canadiens would have taken another direction.
  • It’s a safe bet to assume that the Canadiens would have selected Morgan Reilly, had Galchenyuk been chosen.

► LeBron Zetterberg?

  • Despite the loss of captain Steven Stamkos, the Tampa Bay Lightning took care of the Detroit Red Wings in five games and days after the loss, the crap is beginning to hit the fan.
  • According to Jeff Moss of detroitsportsrag.com, Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg made lineup decision during the season and post-season for the club, rather than head coach Jeff Blashill.
  • Blashill, one of the youngest coaches in the league at 42-years old, was in his first season behind the Wings bench that saw the team record a 41-30-11 record on way to a playoff spot.
  • During a season that saw the majority of the Red Wings players underperforming, Zetterberg was no different, recording a team-high 50 points, his lowest in a season he’s played upwards of 70 games.

► Well At Least He’s Good At Hockey

  • With four more years of hockey overseas under his belt, Alexander Radulov feels like coming back to the NHL, and it appears he’ll meet up with an old friend.
  • According to Russian journalist Slava Malamud, fellow Russian Seymeon Varlamov may have spilled the beans on a possible return stating “[The Avalanche] are waiting for Radulov. He’ll be one of the leaders [here.]”
  • Radulov can certainly help a team in desperate need of depth on the wing. With 65 points with 53 games in the KHL last season and his last NHL stop in 2011-12 with Nashville where he had four goals and 13 points in 17 games prior to being benched.

  1. I don’t think Detroit players underperformed .I was surprised they made the playoffs. Over dependant on two aging Stars whose performance will continue to slide. The Russian will go home and float for the rest of his hockey days. Jagr is the exception not the rule !
