Joni Ikonen – Imago/Geisser/All Over Press

With a second round selection in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, 58th overall, the Montreal Canadiens select:

Joni Ikonen, C, Frolunda (Super Elit/SHL)
April 14 1999 | Espoo, Fin
5’11’, 176Lbs. | Shoots R |
2016-’17: 40 GP, 22 G, 19 A, 41 PTS (Frolunda HC)

CSB: No. 17 (EU Skaters) | ISS: No. 59| THN: No. 17 | HP: No. 32 | FC: No. 62

Joni Ikonen is a dynamic playmaker with top line upside who excels in all three zones. He’s an inside player willing to take punishment to dangle and spin his way into the tough-scoring areas.

Ikonen has excellent balance, is strong on the puck carrier, and makes high-percentage plays off the rush. He dictates the pace of the game when he controls the puck. He’s a strong competitor that takes pride in his 200-ft game.

He has an excellent shot with a quick release and is capable of being more than just a pass-first pivot. He centered Frolunda’s top line, displaying chemistry with fellow 2017 draft eligible, Kristian Vesalainen.
