► Notes from Canadiens Practice

Paul Byron has pneumonia. Brian Flynn has a neck injury. They were not at practice today.

With Artturi Lehkonen lining up on the second line at practice today, it probably signals that he will be remaining with the Canadiens this season.

The Canadiens confirmed that Carey Price and Shea Weber will be in the lineup for the final pre-season game on Thursday against the Maple Leafs. Weber will be paired with Nathan Beaulieu.

► Barberio on Waivers

  • As predicted by Rick Stephens in his Game Recap, Mark Barberio was placed on waivers at noon on Wednesday. This followed a poor showing at training camp where he was thoroughly outplayed by Zach Redmond and Mikhail Sergachev.

► Sergachev To Play Out Pre-Season

  • Despite there being a limited number of spots for defenceman on the roster, it seems as though Mikhail Sergachev will be getting his fair shot to make the Canadiens.
  • According to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, Sergachev will play all the Canadiens’ remaining pre-season games as the 18-year old will get an elongated look.
  • The Canadiens’ first round pick from them past year’s draft has a pair of points through three games in a Habs uniform, looking very good at times.
  • Sergachev’s chances of staying with the team have increased with the Canadiens putting Marc Barberio on waivers at noon on Wednesday.

► McDavid Gets the ‘C’

  • The Edmonton Oilers have made Connor McDavid the youngest captain in NHL history. McDavid is 19 years, 266 days old.
  • Milan Lucic, Jordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins were named alternate captains.

► Destination for Condon

  • Mike Condon will not be the starting goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens this season, a role he occupied for much of the 2015-16 campaign. Condon had an underwhelming performance in training camp to follow a tough season.
  • But where will he end up? With the St. John’s IceCaps? Brampton Beast? or elsewhere?
  • Eric Engels reports that a couple of Western conference teams could be interested. The question is will a trade be made or will they simply wait for the Canadiens to put Condon on waivers?

► Terry And Matteau Unclaimed

  • With the superfluity of prospects attempting to crack the team’s opening day lineup, it was no surprise when Stefan Matteau and Chris Terry were placed on waivers, and perhaps even less surprising that they went unclaimed.
  • As was pointed out by General Fanager, all 25 players that were placed on waivers on Monday went unclaimed, including the pair of Canadiens.
  • Terry was signed to a two-way contract this offseason following playing his entire career in the Carolina Hurricanes organization following getting draft by the team in the fifth round in 2007.
  • Matteau was acquired in exchange for Devante Smith-Pelly, who was acquired for Jiri Sekac, and played a minimal amount of games for the Canadiens last season, 12 to be exact, recording only one assist.

► Tough Go Of It For Scherbak

  • Nikita Scherbak’s first professional season went sideways hampered by two significant injuries. Scherbak didn’t win any points during his third training camp in Montreal.
  • The Russian winger had a very good rookie camp on a line with Mike McCarron and Artturi Lehkonen but it didn’t carry over to the main training camp.
  • According to Dan Robertson of TSN 690, Therrien was very disappointed with the play of his former first-round pick tweeting “Michel Therrien says he wasn’t happy with the play of Nikita Scherbak tonight. Said he didn’t compete in the first period.”
  • Scherbak had an injury-riddled first campaign of professional hockey, recording only 23 points in 58 games with the IceCaps last season.

► Lindgren Pays Tribute

  • It’s very clear Canadiens management are very big fans of Charlie Lindgren, and the right-handed netminder just received a new mask with many a Canadiens legend.
  • Lindgren posted the picture of his new mask to Twitter, with the back plate of the mask donning the original Canadiens logo.
  • Other sides of the man’s have the likes of George Vézina, Jacques Plants and Patrick Roy among many other Canadiens legends payed tribute to on the mask.
  • “The new mask. Paying tribute to some of the best that have ever played the game in a Canadiens jersey #HOFgoalies.” Lindgren tweeted earlier in the week.

► Duchene Played Through Pain

  • The paucity of doubt that team Canada would win the World Cup of Hockey contributed to its lack of atmosphere, however that doesn’t make what Matt Duchene did any less awe-inspiring.
  • According to a piece by Pierre Lebrun on ESPN.com, the Avs centreman played upwards of two weeks following separating his shoulder in a 2-on-2 drill.
  • “It was the last drill in practice the day before the Russia game. We were just doing a 2-on-2 battle drill. I barely got bumped. The puck got cycled back to me behind the net, and I think it was Shea Weber who bumped me,” said Duchene.
  • “But he barely bumped me, he kind of just pinned me. And just the way I went in, my shoulder pad slid, I think. And I hit my AC joint right on the divider in the glass. Immediately I felt a shock of pain,” the former third overall pick noted.

► Lapierre Released

  • Former Canadiens agitator Maxim Lapierre’s return to the NHL venture was cut short this week, as he was released from a try-out from the New York Rangers.
  • According to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports, the former Canadiens draft pick is also exploring options in Europe, where he spent the entirety of last season.
  • Lapierre has played upwards of 600 games in his NHL career, recording 65 goals and 139 points over that span.
  • Last season, he the majority of the season with MODO Hockey Ornskoldsvik, where he scored eight goals and recorded 19 points over 34 games in the Swedish Hockey League.
  • The 31-year old was the former 61st overall pick of the Canadiens in the 2003 NHL entry draft.
