Air Canada comments on NHL initiatives to improve safety

Air Canada is a longstanding sponsor of NHL hockey teams. For over 30 years, we have supported and invested significantly in hockey, held with pride by Canadians as this country’s national sport, and its players as role models for our children. As such, we believe it is necessary to voice our concerns and raise the level of discussion on the important topic of head injuries and improving hockey safety.

Our letter of March 9th to the NHL and Canadian Team Presidents which called for changes to curb serious injuries generated much interest and support from customers, shareholders, employees, medical professionals and many other interested parties from across North America, including parents of hockey playing children. We appreciate the numerous supportive emails and comments posted on this site or sent to our executives. The overwhelming majority view is that while hockey is a physical sport, the devastating consequences of dangerous headshots and career or life threatening concussions must, and can, be avoided.

We’ve had conversations with several Team Presidents following our letter and are encouraged by their collective desire to tackle this critical issue. We welcome the initiatives coming out of this week’s NHL meetings including the 5 Point Plan to make the game safer and to better enforce the rules. While more has to be done, it is a step in the right direction to get our national game to where it needs to be and to permit Air Canada to continue supporting NHL hockey.
