► Training camp schedule: September 30

  • Players return to practice this morning after having a well-deserved day off on Monday.
  • Following practice, the Canadiens will depart for Chicago where they will take on the Blackhawks on Wednesday night.
  • 34 players remain at training camp.

Friday October 3, 7:30 pm: Montreal Canadiens vs Ottawa Senators (Canadian Tire Centre)

► Bulldogs camp opens

  • Hamilton Bulldogs open their training camp this morning with a media day at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton.
  • The roster which includes 15 forwards, nine defencemen and three goaltenders can be found at our sister site, Bulldogs Hockey Report.

► Budaj’s new lid

  • Goalie Peter Budaj has a new mask for the 2014-15 and to no one’s surprise it includes Ned Flanders.
  • The new helmet was designed by David Gunnarsson of DaveArt.com

► Eyes on Fucale

  • One of the many things on the minds of NHL general managers when evaluating their training camp is whether a junior aged player is ready to make their club.  Hockey Canada is also keeping track of those decisions as they begin to assemble the roster for Canada’s National team at the 2015 World Junior Championships.
  • TSN’s Bob McKenzie has a first look at a potential roster writing that the Canadiens Zach Fucale “is a strong candidate to be Team Canada’s No. 1 goalie.”
  • Thirty-five players now remain- 20 forwards, 11 defensemen, and four goaltenders.

► Sportsnet unveils studio

  • Rogers Sportsnet is the new home for hockey coverage in Canada and they have a spectacular-looking new studio for their Hockey Central broadcasts.
  • The studio is 11,000 square feet with nine sets and 52 monitors built at a cost of $4.5 million in the CBC complex in Toronto.
  • It includes an 11 x 38 foot ultra-high resolution video wall called Goliath.  Full story is here.

► Gainey is a Blue

  • Former Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey has been contracted as a coaching consultant for the St. Louis Blues. Gainey will advise Blues coach Ken Hitchcock this season.

► Oldest living person to have played in NHL

  • Elmer Lach, who played with the Canadiens from 1940-1954, is now the oldest living player to have played in the NHL. He was born on January 22, 1918, making him now 96 years-old.
  • Lach was one of the three members of the “punch line”, along with teammates Maurice Richard and Toe Blake.
  • He was part of three Stanley Cup winning teams, but his third victory was surely the most memorable. 1:22 into overtime against the Boston Bruins, Lach scored the Stanley Cup winning goal! The memorable part however came afterwards; during the goal celebration, Maurice Richard accidentally broke Lach’s nose with his stick.
