On this day in hockey history … In 1960, Gordie Howe tied Maurice Richard as the NHL’s all-time scoring leader, when his goal in a 5-2 loss to Chicago gave him 945 career points. Richard had an assist the next night, then Howe went ahead for good (until 1989) three days later.

ALL HABS HEADLINES

► Scott Gomez stays home. Habs GM Marc Bergevin said at the opening of training camp this morning that he will buy out Gomez’s contract next summer to remove his team-high $7.3 million salary cap hit from the books. Teams will be allowed two amnesty buyouts to help reach the new reduced cap next season.

Under the new CBA, a buyout is not allowed if a player is injured. To insure Gomez’s eligibility, the Montreal Canadiens have asked him to stay home until the end of the season, with pay.

“I have nothing against Scott Gomez,” said Marc Bergevin. “It was the best thing for the future of the team. He was very professional,” he added. “He understands the situation.”

► Bulldogs called up. Although they didn’t get an invitation to training camp, a few Bulldogs have been called up to participate in an intrasquad game that will be played at the Bell Centre on Thursday.

Louis Leblanc, Patrick Holland, Frédéric St-Denis, Mike Blunden and Michaël Bournival will pass medicals on Monday and attend camp with the Habs. The intrasquad game will be open to the public, free of charge. Fans are welcome to attend the game next Thursday, January 17 at the home of the Habs. The team will release all the details early this week.

► Cédrick Desjardins and Alain Berger on waivers. The Hamilton Bulldogs placed goaltender Cédrick Desjardins and forward Alain Berger on waivers today.

In 15 games with the Bulldogs this season, Desjardins had a record of 5-10-0, a GAA of 3.10, a save percentage of 0.898 and two shutouts.

In the case of Berger, he was pointless in nine games this season.

► Kristo on fire. Danny Kristo has been tearing it up for the University of North Dakota lately and Saturday night was no different as he put up two goals, came an inch away from a hat-trick as he slammed one into the post, and setup two of his teammates for their first career UND goals. UND was victorious against Colorado College in the series finale at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
