Week eight began on the road for the Canadiens, staying in Florida to take on the Panthers Sunday night. For the second consecutive Sunday night, Peter Budaj found himself in net for the Habs. The visiting team took control of the game early on, with David Desharnais and Michael Ryder each scoring a goal in the first period and Brian Gionta and Francis Bouillon each scoring in the second. Despite scoring two goals in the third period, the Panthers could not muster enough to make a comeback – especially after Ryder scored again to seal the Habs’ 5-2 win.
With a few days off to rest after a lengthy road trip, the Canadiens took to the Bell Centre ice on Wednesday night to face off against the Senators. Lars Eller got things started for the Habs by scoring a goal in the first period, assisted by Gabriel Dumont with his first career NHL point. Brendan Gallagher and P.K. Subban followed suit in the second period, each potting a power play goal. The game stayed close throughout all 60 minutes of regulation, forcing overtime and a subsequent shootout with all eyes on goaltenders Robin Lehner and Carey Price. The Sens only managed to get one goal in the shootout, while Alex Galchenyuk and Lars Eller both beat Lehner. The Canadiens retained their first place spot in the Eastern Conference with a 4-3 win.
Back on the road again, Saturday night brought the Habs to New Jersey in a matchup against the Devils. Carey Price was in goal for the Canadiens but Martin Brodeur was still out with an injury, leaving Johan Hedberg in net for the home team. Colby Armstrong lit the lamp first, giving the Canadiens a first period lead with his first goal of the season. Second period woes came back to haunt the Habs again, this time rife with turnovers and sloppy penalty killing leading to a Devils goal by Peter Harrold. In the third period Jarred Tinordi, playing in his first NHL game, recorded his first career NHL point as Tomas Plekanec tipped in Tinordi’s shot for the game-winning goal.
With injuries to Brandon Prust, Michael Ryder, Rene Bourque, Raphael Diaz and Yannick Weber, one might have expected Montreal to slip in the standings. Despite the adversity the Habs extended their win streak to five straight games. Still holding on to first place in the conference, the Canadiens will have a couple of days off before taking home ice at the Bell Centre in a game against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night.
