Week nine proved to be the week for visiting teams. The Habs kicked things off at the Bell Centre in a matchup against the Buffalo Sabres which would end with Steve Ott scoring an overtime winner for Buffalo. Carey Price and Jhonas Enroth were in net in a close game that opened up in the second period when the Sabres scored two goals. Max Pacioretty and Colby Armstrong answered in the third period to tie the game and send it into overtime. P.K. Subban then took an ill-timed high-sticking penalty, leading to Ott’s winning power play goal. Going into this game, the Sabres had held the NHL’s worst power play record.
Next the Canadiens traveled to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders and face yet another backup goaltender, Kevin Poulin. The teams both scored a goal in the first 40 minutes: Michael Ryder with a power play goal in the first period and P.K. Subban with a power play goal in the second period. The Islanders defense broke down completely in the third period, allowing Brian Gionta to score a goal less then a minute into the period, followed by P.K. Subban, and Brendan Gallagher to complete the 5-2 Habs win.
The Habs returned to the Bell Centre on Saturday to face a familiar foe: the Buffalo Sabres. This time it was Ryan Miller in the visitor’s net, and the Canadiens made sure he was tested. Montreal outshot Buffalo 39-18 and had many good scoring chances, but just couldn’t capitalize on most of them. The Sabres scored two goals in the second period, but the Habs could only muster a Michael Ryder power play goal in the third period in return. Earlier in the day, the Canadiens reclaimed Jeff Halpern off waivers from the New York Rangers, but he did not make it to Montreal in time for the game.
The Canadiens have a couple of days off before traveling to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins Tuesday night. The Habs currently sit in second place in the Eastern Conference, three points behind the Penguins.
