After weeks and weeks of waiting, the Montreal Canadiens 2014-15 season has finally arrived!  And although the week began on Wednesday night, there was no shortage of action for Habs fans to enjoy.  For the sixth consecutive year, the Canadiens kicked off the year with a rivalry matchup in Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs. The game marked the NHL debut with the Habs for Jiri Sekac.  It was a night of firsts for P. A. Parenteau as well, grabbing his first assist with Montreal on Max Pacioretty’s first goal of the year in the first period.  Tomas Plekanec tied the game at two goals each in the second period, with P.K. Subban scoring the go-ahead goal in the final frame.  With regulation coming to a close, Mike Santorelli put a puck past Price to tie things up again, but Plekanec came through with his second goal of the night with less than a minute remaining to seal the opening night win for the Habs.  Final score: Canadiens, 4-3. After traveling late overnight, the Canadiens arrived in Washington, D.C. for a game the following night against the Capitals.  It was the home opener for the Caps, as well as their 40th anniversary celebration, but that didn’t stop the Habs from playing to win.  Dustin Tokarski took over in net this night, as was planned due to week’s game schedule.  The first period showed the weariness of the Habs after having such a late night, and they wouldn’t register a shot on goal until very late in the period.  Defensively, Montreal was able to hold the Capitals to just one goal while the Habs had a Parenteau goal overturned and an “almost” goal that showed to hit the post.  Plekanec made his mark yet again, with a goal in the third period to force overtime.  After no scoring in the extra period the Canadiens prevailed in the shootout, with Brendan Gallagher scoring in the fifth round.  Final score: Canadiens, 2-1 (SO). The first Saturday night game of the season brought just as much drama with it as the Canadiens traveled to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers.  This time it was Philly with its backup goaltender getting the start, as Ray Emery took up residence in net.  The Habs found themselves in another sluggish first period, which the winless Flyers took advantage of by scoring two goals just 18 seconds apart.  They extended their lead to three goals in the second period, thanks to sloppy penalty killing and poor power-play passing.  The third period, however, brought a turnaround by the Canadiens with Andrei Markov, Plekanec, and Alex Galchenyuk all scoring to knot the score at three.  The Habs took it to a shootout for the second consecutive game and this time it was Parenteau with the winning goal.  Final score: Canadiens, 4-3 (SO). It’s another quick turnaround for the Canadiens this week as they head to Florida for a Thanksgiving night matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
