A busy week for the Canadiens kicked off with a Sunday evening tilt on home ice against the Florida Panthers. Peter Budaj was in net on this night, as Carey Price had been the netminder the preceding night. Accruing shots on goal continued to be an issue for the Habs, and was reflected in yet another game where they didn’t score in either of the opening two periods. Alex Galchenyuk managed to help the power play a bit by potting a goal while on the man advantage. Incessant line juggling by coach Michel Therrien proved to fruitless, leaving the Habs just shy of a win. Final score: Panthers, 2-1. (Read our full recap here: Habs Fail to Find Offence on Home Ice)
The Canadiens took to the Bell Centre ice again on Tuesday night to take on the Phoenix Coyotes, a team who hasn’t won in Montreal since 1996. Rene Bourque returned to the Habs lineup from injury. Yet again, the Canadiens’ side of the scoreboard was left blank for the first 40 minutes of the game. Price played another stellar game, keeping the Habs only behind by one goal. Then, in the third period, the home team seemed to wake up, with both Andrei Markov and Max Pacioretty scoring power play goals and then Pacioretty sealing the deal with an empty-netter. Final score: Canadiens, 3-1.
Taking to the road, the Habs headed to St. Louis for a Thursday night game against the Blues. The goal scoring ominously started on for the Blues with a short-handed goal by Alexander Steen. Brendan Gallagher got the Habs on the scoreboard in the second period, but his would be the only tally for the visiting team on this night. Defensive breakdowns led to multiple goals for the Blues, for which Price became visibly frustrated late in the game. Final score: Blues, 5-1. The Canadiens wrapped up their week in Nashville in a game against the Predators, their last before the Christmas break. For the first time in nine games, the Habs managed to get on the scoreboard in the opening period. P. K. Subban, Pacioretty, and Tomas Plekanec all scored in the first 20 minutes, helping to swing some momentum towards the visiting team. The Predators turned things around in the second period, however, and crawled back to within one goal of the Canadiens. The Habs continued sloppy play in the third period, and defensive breakdowns allowed the Preds to tie the game and force overtime. David Desharnais scored the game winner in the extra period. The Canadiens now have an entire week off to celebrate the Christmas holiday and won’t return to the ice until next Saturday night when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning. 1st Star: Carey Price
Carey Price is clearly the most valuable player on the team this season. He continues to give his team a chance to win even when abandoned by the rest of the team. Price had two wins this week.
2nd Star: Max Pacioretty
Max Pacioretty has worked through a cold spot and seems to be getting back on track with three goals and an assist this week.
3rd Star: P.K. Subban
With Michel Therrien constantly juggling the lines and the defense pairs, P.K. Subban has had to play at a high level with less than top notch partners. He had a goal and an assist.
