After a whirlwind opening week, the Canadiens started the second week of the season on Monday night with a Thanksgiving Day tilt in Tampa Bay against the Lightning in which they hoped to uphold their undefeated status. Victor Hedman kicked off the scoring in the first five minutes of the game, with Steven Stamkos doing the same not long after. Brendan Gallagher got the Habs on the board with a tip-in from Jarred Tinordi. Unfortunately, that was the only puck the Canadiens could get past Ben Bishop on this evening. Stamkos scored on a breakaway in the second period, and then garnered his first natural hat trick of the season by lighting the lamp again. Dustin Tokarski took over for Carey Price in goal to start the third period, but the change in netminders didn’t shake up gameplay. Three more Lightning goals in the final frame sealed the deal on the first Montreal loss of the year. Final score: Lightning, 7-1. Thursday night brought Ken Dryden back to the Bell Centre ice, passing the iconic Habs torch off to Price to start the home opener ceremonies in Montreal. After each player on the roster skated out to lift the torch to the sell-out crowd, the puck was dropped in the first rivalry throwdown of the year with the Boston Bruins. Once again, the Habs’ opponent scored the first goal, but Max Pacioretty potted a power play goal to tie things up in the first period. Gallagher came through in the second period with an even-strength goal, and then Jiri Sekac scored his first NHL goal. Sekac’s family was in attendance and his father’s reaction to the goal was exuberant, to say the least. Gallagher lit the lamp again in the third, after the Bruins had taken a one-goal lead, and chased Tuuka Rask out of goal. An empty-netter by P.A. Parenteau, his first with the Habs, ensured a Montreal victory. Final score: Canadiens, 6-4. (Read our full recap here: Gallagher Scores Twice, Habs Take Down Rival)
The week wrapped up on Saturday night when the Colorado Avalanche visited the Bell Centre. The game marked Danny Briere’s first return to Montreal after being traded over the summer, and the first game for backup Colorado goaltender Calvin Pickard as both of Patrick Roy’s starters are out with injuries. Keeping with tradition so far this season, the Avs got on the board first with an Alex Tanguay goal just over two minutes after puck drop. The second brought a turnaround in momentum, as P.K. Subban and Alex Galchenyuk both got the puck past Pickard. Subban found the back of the net again on a breakaway after leaving the penalty box. The Avs closed the gap a bit late in the third when Roy pulled his goaltender with three minutes remaining, allowing Matt Duchene to bring his team one closer to tying.
