The week kicked off on Tuesday with the Canadiens making a trip to Tampa Bay. Goaltending proved to be a big factor in this game against the Lightning. Both teams had a lot on the line, looking to shore up a playoff position in which they’ll likely face each other in the first round. Douglas Murray received a match penalty for an elbow he delivered to the head of Michael Kostka. He would later be handed a three-game penalty for the action. Brendan Gallagher was the only player from Montreal able to get on the score board on this night. Final score: Lightning, 3-1. (Read our full recap here: Price Stellar in Loss to Bolts)
On Friday night, the Habs found themselves a bit closer to home when they visited the Ottawa Senators. The game opened up much more offensively, with five goals scored between the two teams in the opening 10 minutes. Andrei Markov, Mike Weaver, and Max Pacioretty all tallied a goal in the first period. P.K. Subban, however, was on the ice for two of Senators goals and found himself riding the bench until the second period. Lars Eller and David Desharnais would also find the back of the net, with Pacioretty scoring two more to complete the natural hat trick. Final score: Canadiens, 7-4. Saturday brought the Canadiens home to the Bell Centre for an Original Six matchup with the Detroit Red Wings. Michael Bournival lit the lamp for the Habs in the first period and Pacioretty knocked in his 39th goal of the season in the second, followed by Brian Gionta. Gionta was playing his 300th game with Montreal. The Red Wings quickly came back to tie things up in the third period, but another goal from the captain and one from Alex Galchenyuk helped to seal the win for the Canadiens. Final score: Canadiens, 5-3. (Read our full recap here: When Habs Sag, Price, Gionta Lead the Way)
