The week kicked off with a rare Sunday night tilt against the Calgary Flames.  The Bell Centre crowd was looking for a better showing against Calgary compared to the team’s road performance the previous week.  A telling statistic came at the end of the first period when shots on goal were recorded at 19-4 in favor of the Flames.  The Habs’ defense broke down and allowed goal after goal, before Max Pacioretty and Lars Eller finally scored a goal each in the final frame.  It wasn’t enough, however, to close the deficit on the scoreboard.  When Michel Therrien was asked after the game if there were any positives to take from the performance, he simply said, “No.”  Final score: Flames, 6-2. Tuesday night brought the Chicago Blackhawks to town for an original-six matchup.  Carey Price was the star of this show for the Canadiens, making majestic save after save.  But it was the opposing team who would get the accolades on the evening.  The Blackhawks scored goals in every period, with a total of three in the final frame.  For the Habs, it was another poor showing with weak defense, penalty killing, and offensive chances.  Many Bell Centre fans had already left the building by the time the shutout was officially in the books.  Final score: Blackhawks, 5-0. Hoping to rebound after an abysmal showing against Chicago, the Habs took a short road trip to Buffalo on Wednesday night to take on the bottom-ranked Sabres.  It should have been an easy win to bolster the team’s confidence.  Instead, the same team from Tuesday night seemed to take the ice at the First Niagara Center with another lackluster performance.  Dustin Tokarski took residence in net for the Habs, giving Price a rest on the back-to-back.  P.A. Parenteau finally got the Canadiens on the scoreboard in the third period, forcing overtime.  Both goaltenders stood tall in the extra period, sending the game to a shootout.  Alex Galchenyuk and Parenteau both scored in the shootout to give the Canadiens a win.  Final score: Canadiens, 2-1 (SO).  (Read our full recap here: Panic Averted with Shootout Win)

It was a special night in the Bell Centre on Saturday night, as the pre-game ceremony included the retirement of Guy Lapointe’s jersey.  After a rousing rendition of ‘O Canada’ from a Roger Doucet recording, the Canadiens took the ice against the Minnesota Wild.  After another slow first period, the Canadiens got on the board first with a goal mid-way through the second frame by Brendan Gallagher.  After the Wild tied things up a few minutes later, Lars Eller put the Habs ahead once again in the final minute of the period.  Jiri Sekac helped to extend the Habs lead in the third period with a goal after Brandon Prust was pushed into the net.  Max Pacioretty followed suit moments later with a goal of his own.  Final score: Canadiens, 4-1.  (Read our full recap here: Price Holds Early, Eller Provides Turning Point)
