Another Sunday night game got the week started for the Montreal Canadiens as they traveled to Detroit for an original six matchup against the Red Wings. Dustin Tokarski got the start in goal for this second game of a back-to-back. Brandon Prust put the Habs on the board in the second period with his first goal of the season. P.K. Subban followed that with a goal of his own. Tomas Plekanec and Brendan Gallagher each tallied a goal in the third, to which the Red Wings had no answer. Final score: Canadiens, 4-1. On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins visited the Bell Centre but the result was not the exciting game many fans were expecting. The Canadiens saw their six-game winning streak come to end after Marc-Andre Fleury posted his fourth shutout of the season. The power play also continued to struggle as the Habs went 0-3 on the man advantage. Final score: Penguins, 4-0. (Read our full recap here: Not Ready for Prime Time)
GM Marc Bergevin shook things up with his team again on Thursday, trading Rene Bourque to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for yet another defenceman, Bryan Allen. After giving up the first goal of the game to their opponent, the St. Louis Blues, the Canadiens rebounded and racked up four goals in the second and third periods: two by Max Pacioretty, one from Dale Weise, and one from Lars Eller. The four-game week wrapped up on Saturday night with a trip into Boston for a gritty game against the Bruins. Andrei Markov scored his 100th goal in the first period, made even sweeter because it was also the first power play goal in an away game this season for the Habs. The game stayed edgy, with lots of pushing and shoving, but no real brawls except for a rematch by Weise and Gregory Campbell. Plekanec netted another one for the Habs in the second period, and Carey Price earned his first shutout in TD Garden. Final score: Canadiens, 2-0. The Canadiens take to the ice on a second-consecutive Sunday night with a tilt in Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers, followed by a home-and-home with the Buffalo Sabres.
