The week kicked off with yet another Sunday night game, on the tail-end of a back-to-back schedule. This game found the Montreal Canadiens visiting the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Dustin Tokarski got the start to give Carey Price a rest after playing the previous night. Unfortunately, it seemed as though the rest of the team needed a rest as well. Penalties accumulated rather quickly during the game, and the Habs couldn’t seem to gel on either side of the ice. Final score: Rangers, 5-0 . (Read our full recap here: Humbled at MSG)
After a few days off, the Canadiens took to the ice again on Friday night for the first game in a home-and-home against the Buffalo Sabres. Eric Tangradi donned a Canadiens jersey in his debut with the team. The offense yet again couldn’t get the puck going, and heading into the third period it looked like another potential shutout was looming. Alexei Emelin would later be fined for hitting former captain Brian Gionta in the head toward the end of the game. P.A. Parenteau put the Habs on the board to avoid being blanked, but the bottom-ranked Sabres were able to get one more goal before the end of the game. Final score: Sabres, 2-1. (Read our full recap here: Blame It On the Offense)
The next night brought the teams to Montreal to face off again, this time in the Bell Centre. Tokarski got his second start this week, on another back-to-back set of games. After twenty minutes it was more of the usual for the Canadiens, with no goals scored and allowing a goal against. Brendan Gallagher, after signing a six-year contract extension earlier in the day, evened the score for the Habs with a goal that had to be confirmed after a lengthy review. Lars Eller tied the game yet again after the Sabres had tallied another goal. Then, with just over six minutes remaining, Max Pacioretty gave the Canadiens the first lead of the night, only to have Buffalo knot the score at three-apiece moments later which would force overtime and eventually a shootout. Ryan Flynn scores the only goal in the shootout after five rounds to clinch the win for Buffalo. Final score: Sabres, 4-3 (SO). (Read our full recap here: Habs Drop Second Straight to Sabres)
