Game Report

It was an all-Canadian matchup at the Bell Centre on Saturday night. On Hockey Day in Canada!

That used to mean something special.

Without fans, the atmosphere in the building was flat. And for the first ten minutes of the game, there was a decided lack of energy on the ice.

The Oilers started goaltender Stuart Skinner who, despite the lack of activity around him, looked rather beatable. He was having great difficulty with the puck, handling it like a grenade.

But at the other end of Sam Montembeault was not sharp. The Canadiens were down 3-0 after the first period. And with 40 minutes played Montembeault got the hook after giving up six goals on 16 shots.

The Canadiens have suffered with AHL-caliber goaltending for much of the season and that was the case again tonight.

Up Next

The Canadiens may welcome a number of players back on Sunday. Prior to the game, Carey Price will speak to the media for the first time this season. They will host the Columbus Blue Jackets for a rare Sunday night contest at the Bell Centre.

Post-game Quotes

Dominique Ducharme

  • “I want to see five red jerseys go into the corner. I’d never ask one person to fight, but I want to see five reds in the corner.”
  • “We had a plan. (Connor) McDavid didn’t have a point. I think we did a good job there.”

Jeff Petry

  • “That’s on me and the other guys on the ice. It’s not a matter of fighting him, just a matter of getting in his face so he knows that can’t happen.”
