MONTREAL, QC. — Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette / HockeyInsideOut wrote an article about Theoren Fleury’s criticism of the justice system following the conviction of Graham James. Hickey took aim at Fleury calling him hypocritical for staying silent about his abuser while the two were co-owners of the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL.
“Here was someone who had suffered abuse at the hands of Graham James. Here was someone who knew that James had abused other players. Here was someone who was exposing other children to the same sexual predator. Fleury has been through enough counselling to know there’s a word for someone who acts in this fashion – enabler.” — Pat Hickey
Hickey and his editor Stu Cowan appeared on radio today in Montreal and Toronto to respond to critics of the piece. We have had an overwhelming number of requests to post the audio for those who didn’t have a chance to hear it. You can listen to the radio clips in the player below. It is, at times, uncomfortable to listen to but perhaps helps to understand the opinion of a large number of people who are upset with the views of the columnist.
If you missed Hickey’s column and the written responses by Theoren Fleury and Julie Veilleux, you can find excerpts and the links here.
Thank you very much for uploading this. It was quite interesting to listen to. You need to be very careful of the send button. It was great to hear him challenged by the hosts.
Your welcome Steven. Even when Hickey was given time to reconsider his offensive comments, he didn’t back down and instead made matters worse for himself.
Personally I’ve stopped posting over at HIO, until Hickey either withdraws or formally apologizes.
Listening to this, he clearly is not doing neither.
Thanks for sharing this, Rick.
Glad to share audio.
