    TSN:

The rich just got a whole lot richer.

Sources tell TSN that free agent Marian Hossa has signed a one-year, $7.4 million deal with the defending Stanley Cup champions the Detroit Red Wings.

The 6-foot-1 winger scored 29 goals and 66 points in 72 games split between the Atlanta Thrahsers and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Hossa, 29, was acquired from the Thrashers at the trade deadline and helped Pittsburgh in its march to the Stanley Cups Finals. With 12 goals and 14 assists in 20 games, the 2008 playoffs went a long way to helping Hossa shed his reputation as a player that shone in the regular season, but struggled when it really mattered.

Originally a first-round draft pick by the Ottawa Senators in 1997, Hossa has been named to five NHL all-star teams and has recorded 299 goals and 648 points in 701 career games. Hossa was shipped to Atlanta as part of the Dany Heatley trade in 2005.

&*$#!!* Unbelievable…….wow, this is truly shocking news. Unless there is a provision written into the contract which gives Hossa an option on a extension.

Where was Bob Gainey in this entire situation??? I guess we should wait until further details are made available to the media.

    1. Well I won’t say I told you so but….. Mats will take for ever on this one. I believe if there is 1 team who can wait out Mats it is the habs. It is a gamble but the rewards are great if he changes his mind. The following Web page http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ is a good resource because it is kept up to date with the cap nos. with all the recent signings. It shows the Habs are at 10.9mil left in cap room. With pretty much the same team that won the eastern conference. I hope Bob Gainey is waiting him out, after the 1st week, you can find bargains and after Hossa & Sundin there really wasn’t anyone worth blowing your salary cap on. So if Sundin decides he is not playing anymore, there may be some useful assets available at a lower price than these 1st couple of weeks.
My prediction is if Sundin does play, it will be Mtl. now. Of all teams with more $$$ left, only really Ottawa is left based on his criteria, wanting to stay in Canada, and being in the west. As Mats has shown it is not about the $$ with him, and I believe Gainey and how he handled Sundin’s request to not rush it will win him over in the long run.
