The Canadiens are now 0-7 once the clock moves past the 60-minute mark. But we are seeing some changes in the way the Habs manage the 3-on-3 session. Now if only they could execute. The simple folks at the Gazette were completely perplexed at Montreal’s “tentative” approach to overtime. But the intent was clear: maintain possession during the first few minutes to tire the Canucks, particularly Quinn Hughes, in the hopes that fatigue would induce mistakes in play or on a line change. Whether one agrees with the strategy or not, it is new for the Canadiens brought by interim head coach Dominique Ducharme. Hughes’ shift to start OT was in the 2:10 range, but there were no errors to speak about. Instead it was Montreal who made unprovoked mistakes. It was in the shootout where Ducharme offered up plenty of ammunition for his critics. His player choices were uninspired, and in turn, each shooter delivered a pathetic effort. What was missing in the shootout was an ability to finish. But if the Canadiens had any degree of that, this game wouldn’t have gone to extra time in the first place. Even Ducharme acknowledged that Montreal had plenty of opportunities to score in regulation but couldn’t finish. Carey Price was brilliant continuing his strong play in his last three starts.
