Game Report

Just 54 seconds into the game Phillip Danault made a costly turnover and Auston Matthews beat Jake Allen on a wrap around. It was not the start that the Canadiens were looking for against a potent Maple Leafs lineup. But a minute and 21 seconds later, Corey Perry had tied the score.

The Canadiens were fortunate to exit the first period tied as the Leafs controlled the play for long stretches. Montreal dominated the second period outshooting Toronto 17-4. Allen was struggling with rebound control throughout the game but fortunately had little to do in the middle frame.

The Leafs took advantage of a puck off the skate of Victor Mete for an early third period goal. Mete had lost a board battle on the same shift giving Toronto possession. The Leafs would add another in the middle of the period on their way to their 27th victory of the season.

Jonathan Drouin has now gone 18 games without a goal and still does not have a power-play goal on the season. Yet Drouin remains the fourth most used forward on the team ahead of Josh Anderson, Brendan Gallagher, Tomas Tatar and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The interim head coach thinks he has been playing well.

The Canadiens have just one win in four games with the Maple Leafs so far this season. Toronto has an 8-0-1 record in their last nine games.

Post-game Quotes

Dominique Ducharme

  • “We were just one goal away from tying it up. We had our chances in the second period. We weren’t active enough in the first. I don’t think they dominated us for 60 minutes. We’re right there with them, and we’re looking forward to the next game against them.”

Corey Perry

  • “They won the first period. I thought we outplayed them in the second period, and for half of the third they probably outplayed us. It’s close. It’s a bounce here and there. You look at their second goal, it went off two players and right to an open guy, who banged it in. That’s hockey. That’s how it goes in the playoffs. There’s a bounce, and that’s the hockey game. I think we’re right there. We’ve got to continue to push a little harder and get a little bit better each and every night.”
