Canadiens Sign Free Agent Joe Callahan to One-Year, Two-Way NHL/AHL Contract

MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens General Manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of free agent defenceman Joe Callahan to a one-year, two-way National Hockey league (NHL) / American Hockey League (AHL) contract for the 2011-2012 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The Hamilton Bulldogs also announced that goaltender Nicola Riopel, defencemen Tony DeHart and forward Ben Winnett have been released from their tryout contracts.
Callahan, 28, played in 27 games with the Florida Panthers in 2010-2011 registering one assist and 12 penalty minutes. The native of Brockton, Massachusetts also played in 48 games with the Rochester Americans compiling 13 points (four goals, nine assists) and 12 penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenceman has appeared in 450 career regular season games in the AHL registering 100 points (19 goals, 81 assists) and 359 penalty minutes and 46 career regular season games in the NHL posting four assists and 16 penalty minutes. Callahan was drafted in the 3rd round, 70th overall by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

The ‘Dogs will open their 2011-2012 season at home on Saturday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m. at Copps Coliseum against the Rochester Americans. All regular season Hamilton Bulldogs games can be heard live on AM 820 CHAM beginning with a pre-game show 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
