You know, the ones who have been skating their opposition into the ground? The guys with clean exits, pinpoint passes, slick puck movement? Well, those folks didn’t show up at Rogers Arena on Wednesday night. Montreal was sluggish out of the gates and struggled to get out of their own zone. Discipline was once again an issue, the penalty-kill was “soft” (to borrow a Claude Julien word) and collectively, the Canadiens defence was bad. That said, the Habs offence was still in fine form, able to trade goals with the Canucks throughout the game. And despite issues in their own zone, Montreal was still able to pick up a point. The Canadiens third line was the team’s strongest in this game. Jesperi Kotkaniemi picked up his first goal of the season while Tyler Toffoli notched a hat trick against his former team. Joel Armia played his strongest game of the year. We have seen Joel Edmundson take baby steps forward each game this season as he has had difficulty adjusting to the Canadiens zone defence scheme. Tonight it was back to the starting blocks with a very rough outing. Too often Edmundson stayed planted in one spot on the ice rather than getting caught out of position. Edmundson lost races to loose pucks, lost board battles and was ineffective in front of his own goal. Early in the season, the Canadiens are third in the NHL in minor penalties with 20 in four games. Montreal is 22nd in the league in penalties drawn. That’s a bad combination and is not a sustainable plan for success in the long term.
