Habster:
Give credit to Guy Carbonneau for defending Tom Kostopoulos’ minor indiscretion. Thanks to whining Flyers coach John Stevens, the whole situation has been totally blown out of proportion.
Tom Kostopoulos is a fiercely competitive player and was rightfully pissed off by the Flyers taunting (especially Umberger and Timonen) him and his teammates after the Flyers fourth goal. The game was pretty much out of reach after that goal so the Flyers should have just gone to their bench to celebrate with their teammates…….show more class!!!
For Stevens to go out of his way to make an issue of such a minor thing during his post game press conference is silly and absolutely bizarre. What he should have addressed during his press conference was the lack of intensity his team displayed in game #2. He should have also mentioned how lucky his team was to leave Montreal with a victory after being dominated by the Canadiens in game #2.
He should have counted his luck stars that Martin Biron stood on his head making 34 saves otherwise it could have easily been a blowout for the Canadiens. If the Habs would have received half decent goaltending from Carey Price or players had potted their scoring chances (or hitting the net with their shots!!!!), then the outcome would have been a lot different.
The absolute hypocrisy of the whining Flyers and Stevens to make issue of a minor after goal scrum is laughable especially after their suspension filled season (by far the most suspensed team in the NHL….52 games!!!). As Carbonneau stated: “That (the Flyers) is one team that shouldn’t talk. Over 82 games, they had the most suspensions in the league.”
Maybe Stevens is trying to light a fire under his team by making issue with the incident but it could also back fire and motive the Canadiens……time will tell won’t it.
What a joke…wake up. This is a game by game deal if a FLYER DID THAT YOU MORONS WOULD HAVE PROBABLY BURN DOWN YOUR CITY BY NOW.
Of course Carbo is going to defend his player and of course the Stevens is going to call it out..what would you want a coach to do?
Get the lighter fluid out of your eyes.
If a Hab had gloated after scoring a goal on Philly and one of the Flyers had knocked his teeth out, you’d be singing a different tune. I know the Flyers are playing a little different lately. Don’t worry, they’ll go back to losing and taking suspensions soon enough.
John Stevens is the most inept coach left in the playoffs so expect to hear more whining as the series goes on as he becomes more desperate to save his job.
The Flyers were extremely fortunate (for the 2nd game in a row) so Stevens was diverting attention away from the poor performance of his team.
Kostopoulos is the ultimate team guy and if Upshall or Timonen was trash talking Price after the goal, then it’s no surprise that TK would come to his defense.
Price played fine but could have used more work, and help from his defense. The Canadiens needed to bury a few more of their numerous scoring chances.
OH NO!!! They didn’t taunt or gloat did they!?!? Next thing you know they will be trash talking!!! Take your dresses off and quit whining!!! The refs have given the Habs almost every break during this series. Oh thats right the Flyers deserve all those penalities because that had all those Suspensions. And because the Flyers have all those suspensions the Habs are justified in doing whatever they want. You guys can keep whining we’ll keep winning. What are you going to whine about when the Flyers pull out their “A” game???
“John Stevens is the most inept coach left in the playoffs…” Hey Rocket your an idiot! Stevens has turned the Flyers (along with Holgrem) in one year!!! He has won the Calder Cup and he could be coaching for the Confernce Championship next week!
since when was smiling and celebrating with your teammates considered taunting???? Please…grow up, Frenchies…the refs can’t save you for much longer
Wow, anon has really got his panties in a knot! With its team up in the series 2-1, why are the Philly fans sounding so insecure?
I have some respect for the job that the Philly GM has done (by the way, anon, his name is Holmgren). He brought in Timonen, Briere, Richards & Hartnell.
But general consensus is that Stevens has been a disaster and is coaching to keep his job.
I think we have already seen Philly’s ‘A’ game (maybe that’s why you are so nervous). It consists of excessive whining, late hits, dirty play, getting all the breaks and a mediocre goaltender who the Canadiens are helping to look good.
“But general consensus is that Stevens has been a disaster and is coaching to keep his job.”
Not in Philly!
“I think we have already seen Philly’s ‘A’ game (maybe that’s why you are so nervous). It consists of excessive whining, late hits, dirty play, getting all the breaks and a mediocre goaltender who the Canadiens are helping to look good.”
And you beleive yourself when you spout that crap??? Why would we be nervous is Philly? Sounds like the way we discribe the Habs and their fans! Everytime you see Carbo he’s whining! And he’s getting the calls! I guess 8 PPs to three is not enough. Let me see… a two man advantage for 2 full minutes,5 minute major and throw in several more PPs and your plus one on your #1 rated PP!!! The only way the Habs can win is on special teams.
It’s jut a shame we are not having this conversation face to face, you could sucker punch me when I walked away!!! Smiling!!!
I suppose that Stevens is fortunate that you like him, cause there wasn’t exactly a long line of teams interested in offering him a job.
A punch to the head isn’t exactly my style but if it helps with your cobwebs, I would be glad to oblige. Instead, maybe some facts would enlighten you. The Canadiens are the highest scoring team in the regular season because of their even strength goals. You may have missed it but the power-play has been awful in the playoffs including last night.
If the Flyers have a problem with power-play chances, then stop taking stupid penalties. There should have been more too! A blatant elbow to the face on Kostopoulos wasn’t called. How about Richard’s shot to Halak’s head that was uncalled? And the too many men penalty at the end of the game on the Habs was pathetic.
Regular season means nothing right now!!! In THIS series the Habs have a grand total of THREE goals while even.
What about, what about, what about. We can do that to! What about the bogus trip on Downie because wonder boy Price can’t skate. Pucks at his feet and Downie went for the puck. Don’t like it stay in the net OR on the bench better yet! Then Downie gets another because two Habs beat on him at once. One Flyer vs. one Habs won’t be fair. You know cuz of all the suspensions snd all. How many minutes did Koivu get for punching Upshall three times while the ref had Scotties hand tied up? Oh that’s right he “taunted” us. And then there was the descrete little cheap shot on Umberger last night but that’s OK too because Hatcher had just smashed somebody’s face off the boards. Let tell you something about that play. In this series, no matter who you play for, you best protect yourself. Translated get you hands up so you don’t get plastered to the end boards like a decal!!! And anything that puss boy Kostopoulos gets he deserves.
Bottom line is Flyers are winning and that’s just unacceptable in Montreal. So you do what the French do you whine! Or is it wine? It would really be a shame to have burned all those perfectly good cars for nothing.
Hey Anonymous (aka:Stevens lover),
First off, Rocket and I (aka “Frenchies”) are happy for your “civil” hockey debate with us. It’s always very refreshing to discuss hockey with a Flyers fan(s).
With that being said, I have to agree with Rocket when he says you got your “panties in a knot! With its team up in the series 2-1, why are the Philly fans sounding so insecure?”. I could only assume that you have come to the realization that your beloved Flyers have been totally outplayed (70-35 shots on net in favor of the Habs the last 2 games!!!) and are very fortunate to be leading the series 2-1.
Thank god for a “Frenchie” Flyers goaltender by the name of Marty Biron who has been the main reason for your Flyers 2-1 edge in the series otherwise the Habs could easily be up 3-0.
By the way “Stevens Lover”, I always love debating about hockey with knowledgeable hockey fans but making derogatory remarks about a person’s nationally or ethic background is a bit much!!
Anyhow, enjoy tomorrow’s game and hopefully your “Frenchie” goalie will be able to stand on his head again and grease up his goal posts/crossbar (7 hit posts so far and counting!!)
I did not make the “Frenchie” comment. I did make the French Wine comment. I thought it was punny. Enough talk I’m ready for another game. One thing is for sure. This is the best series!
Some key Flyer Frenchies. Gagne, Briere, Biron and up and coming Claude Giroux.
I agree, it’s the most competitive series thus far with possible 4-0 sweeps looming in the other three series.
If this series goes 6 or 7 games (which is a very good possibility), it’s going to be very difficult for either the Flyers or the Habs to beat the Pens after the physical grind.
The Pens will get another week or more off to heal and rest up while the Flyers/Habs will not have that luxury.
I’m sorry if you weren’t the “Frenchie” anonymous commenter but I wish everybody would use a fictitious name or just your first name…….it’s hard to distinguish between “anonymous”!!!
As far as “Some key Flyer Frenchies. Gagne, Briere, Biron and up and coming Claude Giroux”…..I couldn’t agree more with the comment!!! The Flyers have a strong “FRANCOPHONE” element to their team and they greatly contribute to the team’s success. Claude Giroux will be a Daniel Briere clone with a bit more playmaking and physicality to his game, Flyers fans will be happy to see him in the Flyers lineup next season.
Thanks to everyone for the comments (except the frenchie thing!!!) and let’s continue the discussion after tonight’s Habs victory……4-2 score!!!
All and all the Frenchie is not as bad as it could have been! Enough said there. It always amazes me that the Flyers have had so few Commies, (hehehe) Russians. They’ve had a few but not many. I know Clarke had a problem with them for a long time.
Maybe after Dimitri Tertyshny getting killed in astupid accident they shyed away. I just know that I love this team! I so love watching young players make mistakes in the playoffs rather than old players struggling to try and get the job done. Too many years with too many has-beens!!! Not matter what happens from here out the Flyers are back and will continue to improve. If the Flyers do meet the Pens and can stay healthy they could give them a better run then Sens and NYR have! They had some great games this year and the Flyers took the season series. But that was “regular” season.
Is it game time yet????
BB13
Hey BB13,
Your right about Bob Clarke, he wasn’t big on Russian players probably because he feels (rightfully or wrongfully)that they don’t have as much heart as the Canadian or American players.
Let’s be honest, he also has a deep hatred/dislike of Russians which dated back to his playing days in the NHL and especially during his playing time against the USSR teams in 1972 and 1976.
He swung his stick at Valerie Kharlamov in game six in 1976 and broke his leg……..the rest is history!!!
Like yourself (as a Flyers fan), I also love watching and following the Habs prospects. Both teams have very bright futures ahead of them with great young players making their mark at the NHL level…..the birth of this blog site was started because I wanted to inform Canadiens fans about these bright, up and coming young players.
Anyhow, enjoy the game tonight and hopefully I’m happier than you are when the game end……..LOL
“Anyhow, enjoy the game tonight and hopefully I’m happier than you are when the game end……..LOL”
Long as happier at the end of the series!!!
The key now is to win your last game! Only one team gets to do that!
