The Three Stars of the Week
1. RW Danny Kristo
Kristo’s inconsistencies were shelved for at least one weekend as he helped push North Dakota to a weekend sweep of University of Wisconsin. Kristo scored the 2nd and assisted on the 3rd goal in a 5-3 victory for North Dakota on Friday night. Kristo’s two points on the night also saw him surpass his previous-season mark of 28 points, in eight fewer games. Kristo matched his scoring output on Saturday night, recording the opening goal of the game than assisting on an insurance marker later in the game to bring about a 4-2 victory for North Dakota. Kristo’s scoring raises him to 31 points in 27 games and has him tied for the team lead in scoring at North Dakota and tied for 15th overall in league-wide scoring. Kristo was drafted in the 2nd round, 56th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2008 Entry Draft.
2. D Darren Dietz
Dietz made a notable mark on his scoring totals as he continues to work towards career highs in his season with the Saskatoon Blades. Dietz scored two goals in an 8-1 rout of the Regina Pats on Saturday night, beating his previous-season mark of 8 goals in a season and notching his first 2-goal game. With 9 goals and 20 assists in 50 games this season, Dietz has now matched his entire career output in the WHL prior to the start of the season, in 26 fewer games. Dietz was drafted in the 5th round, 138th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2011 Entry Draft.
3. D Morgan Ellis
Ellis continues to set new marks for his career in the QMJHL while leading the Shawinigan Cataractes in defensive scoring. Ellis began his week notching an assist on Wednesday night in a 6-0 whitewash of the Victoriaville Tigres. Ellis would add his 12th goal of the season on Friday night in an eventual 4-3 loss to the Quebec Ramparts. Ellis’ twelve goals this season over 44 games have now matched his previous career output of 12 goals over 177 games in his first three seasons. Ellis leads his team in defensive scoring, has five goals, nine assists over ten games since arriving in Shawinigan and is 6th overall in defensive scoring in the QMJHL. Ellis was drafted in the 4th round, 117th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2010 Entry Draft.

Great to see prospect write ups.
Patrick Holland is alot more impressive than Kristo, i think they got a steal from Flames. I have seen both play a couple tmes lately.
Holland as well as Kristo and MacMillan all play both PK and PP, but Holland excels on both and while MacMillan is not scoring, it is super that he is on special teams as a freshman.
I just hope Nygren is worst +/- on his team because he plays vs top lines maybe? or is he just that much a defensive liability?
Regarding Holland, I’m dubious at present. He is playing on about the best team in the WHL so his scoring totals are getting some help there and he’s just turned 20 so physically he easily outmatchs the majority of his opposition too. I’ve read some compliments of his intelligence, but Kristo has a superior speed/skills package that translates better to the NHL. Concerning MacMillan, he’s a rookie with a long-term development path for pro play, good BCHL numbers but the kid has such a wiry frame I’m concerned he may never be able to handle pro-level play.
Nygren, his defensive stats concern me as he’s -3 worse than anyone on the roster and frankly as a 21-year old draftee, out of Sweden no less his defensive stats should be better, their hockey programs focus on defence-first.
Holland is on one of best WHL teams with hardly any NHL any draft picks and you cant ignore his 40 points in last 20 games, a team similar to Kootenay last year.
I hope both Kristo and he do very well in AHL next year, but in seeing Holland play, very encouraging and just makes culling Cammalleri that much nicer.
MacMillan was also surprisingly not being pushed around, so he must be getting a bit bigger/stronger and he does have another 2 or 3 years in NCAA to mature.
Holland is still playing with some high-end overagers on that team with Hughesman and Shinniman don’t forget, who are ahead of him in the points race and he plays with regularly. His numbers prior to this season were not that remarkable either. Until he plays outside of Tri-City I’m not investing much in his play. I’ve read notes from two scouts calling him fringe for the NHL.
I don’t hate him, I just don’t see what raises him above a player like Kristo, whose skills package is far ahead of his.
