Don’t expect Mats back with the Leafs next year

Toronto Sun (Steve Simmons):

There is far more mistrust and anger between Mats Sundin, his agents, and the Maple Leafs than anyone is saying for publication. It all goes back to how the possible trading of Sundin was handled by interim general manager Cliff Fletcher. One day after asking Sundin for a final time to waive his no-trade deal, the trade deadline passed and the Leafs offered Sundin a contract extension then. When Sundin chose not to sign it, he was upset the Leafs made the offer public. He also had trouble understanding how one day they were willing to move him and the next day extend him. The betting here, and almost everywhere else in the hockey world, is that Sundin will not return to the Leafs next season. But one quick word of advice: Should he sign with Montreal rather than Toronto, he will never be forgiven for leaving. Detroit is a safer bet for Sundin … Poor Steven Stamkos. Great kid. Great future. But he is going to be drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, which is in flux, up for sale, have basically fired coach John Tortorella and general manger Jay Feaster without firing them, and will bring in Barry Melrose as celebrity coach, with the belief his presence will sell tickets. With Vinny Lecavalier thinking of getting out when he can, this franchise has disaster written all over it.
