Game Report

In 25 days, the 2021-22 season will be over for the Montreal Canadiens. After tonight’s contest, players will have just a dozen games to prove to management that they are part of the solution going forward for the transformed Habs. Kent Hughes has promised to be busy in the off-season so the final process of evaluation will need to be completed over the next three-and-a-half weeks.

Joel Edmundson and David Savard did not live up to the best versions of themselves on this night, but they are expected to be the veterans who will anchor the new look defence. Once again playing almost 22 minutes tonight, Alexander Romanov has developed by leaps and bounds this season.

After that is where it gets interesting as the Canadiens top defensive prospect, Kaiden Guhle is set to join the big club next season. And fans are being treated to a sneak preview of Justin Barron and Jordan Harris. Each received more than 17 minutes of ice-time this evening.

Barron unveiled his shot at the Bell Centre for his first career NHL goal. And Harris, with speed, skill and poise appears to be adapting to NHL-play with ease.

Let’s not forget that over the next couple of years, Mattias Norlinder, Logan Mailloux and Jayden Struble could be knocking on the door.

Mistakes were made, by young and old alike tonight, in a rather sloppily-played affair between two teams at the bottom of the standings. But there were enough reasons to bring the Bell Centre fans to their feet. And a large dose of feistiness between two divisional rivals.

It’s likely the type of hockey that we will see for the month of April. Habs fans can enjoy and start thinking ahead to next season.
