With RFAs Jeff Carter and R.J. Umberger needing to be signed to long term contract and big long term contracts already invested in players like Briere, Gagne, Timonen, Hartnell and Richards, there isn’t a lot of giggle room for Flyers GM Paul Holmgren to add many big name UFAs to the roster.
With the salary cap going up another $3-$5 million next season and if Holmgren can dump some dead wood from his salary cap situation (Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje come to mind), then he will be able to free up some cap space to make one or two contract offer to UFAs.
Needless to say, it will take some manoeuvring but after the masterful job Holmgren did last off season to make the Flyers into a solid playoff contributor, anything is possible!!
