Game Preview by Sam Gerber
Last game : MTL 1  CAR 2

The Habs played a great game and had over 90 shot attempts, 49 reached the net. They only scored one goal which was the difference maker. Curtis McElhinney was solid and had puck luck on his side. The game was highlighted by Shea Weber’s return after an almost year long absence. Weber had the most ice time and was involved physically, not exactly easing himself back into it. The Canes took advantages of the few chances they had which was enough for them to get the win. Montreal have now lost five games in a row.

Players to watch

  • Shea Weber
In his first game back, it was evident that Weber hadn’t played in awhile but he still showed how much of a difference he makes for the Habs. In my opinion, it may take a little time to get up to speed but he definitely was missed on the blueline.
  • Max Domi
After a hot start, Domi has scored just once in his last seven games and hasn’t picked up a point in his last three. With his defence gaffes and ill-timed penalties, it is important that Domi gets back on the scoring swing to ensure that he is making a positive contribution to the Canadiens offence.
  • David Schlemko
Schlemko failed in his audition of playing alongside Weber. That was clear given the comments of Claude Julien following the Carolina game. Schlemko will now get an opportunity to prove himself as the defence partner of Jeff Petry.

Keys to Victory

  • Finish around the net
The Habs lacked finish last game and for much of the season. Montreal ran into a hot goalie but failed to make things difficult for him. If the Canadiens can generate the same scoring chances as they did last game but have much better finish they should start climbing the standings.
  • Use the depth
In my opinion, the Canadiens roster depth is much better than the Rangers. Claude Julien has a tendency to drastically limit his bottom lines and defense pairings. It’s important that the Habs generate some much needed offense from the bottom six.
  • Manage the speed
The Habs and Rangers both play with speed and love to stretch the ice out. Montreal needs to to be cautious when jumping up on the rush as the Rangers speed will easily counter.

What to Expect by Sam Gerber
The Habs need to turn it around. With five losses in a row enough is enough. Montreal desperately needs points in this back-to-back weekend. The Rangers are a rebuilding team that have a combination of skilled veterans and young speedsters. The Habs roster has quite a bit more depth and should have an advantage on the top lines. Carey Price will start in goal against the Rangers. Claude Julien has not yet announced his starter for Sunday’s game. Montreal needs to play the same style no matter who is in net.
