GAME DAY | Sharks – Canadiens: Preview, Prediction, Lines, Goalies, TV

If you didn’t know by now, Shea Weber is back, and he’s on a mission. Weber scored twice in the first period. On the second goal, Weber found himself all alone out front after starting the play from behind his own net. Any questions about Weber’s speed should be gone after he blew by every player and received an amazing pass from Tomas Tatar. Tatar also scored on the power-play which was a big as the Habs almost let the Rangers back in the game. Artturi Lehkonen scored twice doubling his goal production from November. If Lehkonen can continue putting up points, the Habs should make a jump in the standings.

Players to watch

• Paul Byron
  Byron’s return provides more balance in the line-up. He is one of their best penalty killers and is always a threat for a breakaway. Byron’s addition not only changes how the Habs play but how opponents play. He creates space for his teammates who are left open due to Byron’s speed. 
• Phillip Danault
  It’s clear that Danault is not a first line centre, but is forced into the role due to Claude Julien’s preference to use him over Max Domi and Jesperi Kotkaniemi. It is hoped that Danault will become an effective two-way centre but his goals against numbers are fifth-worst in terms of forwards. Hopefully Danault can consistently play well at both ends of the ice to create scoring chances while limiting the opposition. 
• Jonathan Drouin
  At 23-years-old Drouin is fulfilling his childhood dream, playing for the Canadiens and winning the Molson Cup for November. While Drouin can be an offensive threat, he needs to be much more invested in the play when he is without the puck. 

Keys to Victory

• Win the special teams battle
  The Habs have to be careful going up against San Jose. The Sharks can easily win the special teams battle making it important the Habs stay out of the box and capitalize on any power-play chances they get. 
• Be better on the breakout
  Montreal’s breakout against San Jose has to be on point. The Sharks have a number of skilled forwards that can take advantage of any bad passes.
• Use your speed
  The Habs have to get some offensive zone time. The Sharks have two of the best puck-moving defence in the league and can easily disrupt any chance at a cycle. The Canadiens have to get the pucks deep, and get on the body making it difficult for Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson.
