GAMEDAY: All Habs Headlines

► Pearn stays on: General manager Pierre Gauthier announced that former Canadiens assistant coach Perry Pearn, has agreed to remain with the Habs as a pro scout.

Movember gallery: Moustaches are in full bloom throughout the NHL (and the sports world) as athletes bring awareness and raise money for prostate cancer research.  Click the link for a photo gallery titled “Movember sports figures” that includes Carey Price, Brian Gionta, Josh Gorges, Peterri Nokelainen, Raphael Diaz, Anthony Calvillo and Yvon Lambert.

► Fraser gives thumbs up to ‘Canes goal: On Wednesday night, Carolina’s Brett Sutter used his stick to sweep the puck back into play after it had landed on top of the Canadiens goal behind Carey Price.  The disc made its way to Anthony Stewart who deposited it the Habs goal.  Many felt that the goal should have been disallowed.  Former NHL referee Kerry Fraser disagrees.

“Brett Sutter picked the puck cleanly off the top of the netting which was well below the height of his shoulders therefore no high-sticking of the puck resulted. The puck became eligible for Sutter or any of his teammates to play at this point.” — Kerry Fraser

► Habs prospects update: Take the Canadiens injury woes and add general manager Pierre Gauthier‘s fondness for trading prospects for immediate help and the talent cupboard is rather bare in Hamilton. There are few legitimate prospects besides Alexander Avtsin, Brendon Nash, Joonas Nattinen and Louis Leblanc. But look beyond the Bulldogs to the CHL and the picture gets much rosier.

Darren Dietz, D Saskatoon Blades  “The tough, physical defenseman has been playing big minutes in the shutdown role while playing on both the power play and penalty killings units. Dietz has already improved on last season’s offensive numbers and has shown a willingness to defend his teammates by dropping the gloves when it’s needed. He has produced solid numbers so far by scoring five goals (three on the power play) along with 10 assists and a team leading plus-19 while taking 45 PIMs ( three fighting majors and a misconduct) in 24 WHL games.” — Hockey’s Future

Habs 2010 draft class: Here’s another look at Canadiens prospects, specifically those picked in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.  The class is led by Jarred Tinordi, Brendan Gallagher and Morgan Ellis.

Morgan Ellis, D Cape Breton Screaming Eagles “Although the Screaming Eagles (QMJHL) aren’t a contender, they’re much better compared to last year and Ellis’ numbers are much better as a result.  He currently sits 10th the league in points by a defenceman and although his plus/minus isn’t on the happy side of even, it’s much better than last year.  Although it’s still a long shot, he at least has played well enough to be in the discussion for who to invite to camp for the upcoming Canadian World Junior team.” — HabsWorld

  1. Would you guess Ellis, Pateryn, Nygren, Tinordi all make the jump to pro and be headed to AHL next year?

I note Nygren has one of his teams worst +/-, but is doing well offensively.

Beaulieu will still be too young to play AHL next year wont he?
Dietz will stay WHL for 2012-13 for sure eh, unless has a crazy good camp next fall?

    • It’s a very good question Don, but a little early in the season to predict with any accuracy. In my opinion, Tinordi, Gallagher and Kristo will most likely be in Hamilton next season. The next tier with a chance of jumping to pro are Ellis, Dietz and Quailer. Dietz jumped onto the radar with a good camp. Pateryn is a senior this year but isn’t even the best Wolverines prospect… that would be Bennett. It will be interesting to see what happens to Pribyl who would benefit in coming to North America.

      • thanks for reply, just looking down the road at possibly crowded d-core in Hamilton (good problem to have).
I know Bennett may be a #3-4 d-men in several years and I just assume Bennett will not leave Michigan early, cause he really is not tearing it up in NCAA guite yet and Habs dont really need another smallish offensive guy in near future.
But at end of last year he was looking very good with the puck and was only a freshman.

Pateryn would be strictly a defensive d-man (Gorges type), but has good size and is a bit younger and bigger than Nash, Stejskal and Mitera.

Too bad Nash had injury this year, he might be in St.Denis depth slot right now? I know he had bad finish last year, but was just a 1st year pro and big jump from 30-40 games to 80/year.

Pribyl seems (by his numbers only) to do well at lower tier league but not really producing in mens league; too bad he isnt with Shawinnigan, but was under contract i think, like his size, but will he struggle like Avtsin has so far (still early i know).

        • No, not suggesting that Bennett would leave early. Simply moderating expectations of Pateryn.. he hasn’t really stood out in any area at the development camps. He is younger than the trio you mentioned but not bigger…he is actually listed as an inch shorter than all three.

St Denis has performed well as a stop gap, but Nash would be in line if he was healthy. He is better in every aspect of the game.

From our All Habs contact on location, Pribyl’s numbers relate to being in and out of the lineup. As you know, it is not a development league that he plays in…and there seems to be an issue with the coaching staff.

I would have to disagree about Avtsin. He had a series of injuries last season, and when he played had a series of incompatible linemates. Avtsin has been superb this season, the team’s best player on most nights.

          • Great to hear Avtsin is looking better, i know he was injured and a teenager who no speak english last year, but had like 1 point in first 10 games or so this year.
I have seen pateryn play and not really impressive, but blocked shots and seemed solid defensively, but NCAA competition is hard to judge.
reallt too bad Pribyl didnt come over i guess.
            but thanks for info.
