GAMEDAY: All Habs Headlines
► Blame the victim: Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette / HockeyInsideOut penned a piece on Theoren Fleury’s criticism on the justice system following the conviction of Graham James. Hickey takes aim at Fleury calling him hypocritical for staying silent about his abuser while the two were co-owners of the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL.
“Here was someone who had suffered abuse at the hands of Graham James. Here was someone who knew that James had abused other players. Here was someone who was exposing other children to the same sexual predator. Fleury has been through enough counselling to know there’s a word for someone who acts in this fashion – enabler.” — Pat Hickey

► Challenging ignorance: Julie Veilleux is a friend, sports columnist, and All Habs alumni. She also can speak with authority on the issue of sexual assault, being a survivor of sexual abuse and now as a crisis counselor at a rape crisis centre.
“I find it extremely troubling that you put out such hateful words directed toward a victim of sexual abuse who had the courage to speak up after what was probably years of silence caused by crippling shame, disgust, guilt and confusion. Sexual abuse thrives on the silence of its victims, who are manipulated, threatened, frightened, ashamed and alone.” — Julie Veilleux

► Theo’s take: Through his website, Theoren Fleury has called for the firing of Gazette columnist Pat Hickey. In an interview on TSN1050 Hickey declined to back away from any of his words saying “Victims sometimes have to take responsibility for their actions.”
“We find it very distressing to hear anyone, much less a columnist for a major newspaper, take the side of a known convicted rapist by calling Theo Fleury an enabler. Trash talk and garbage columnists focus on the abuser and not on the abused. Pat Hickey is more interested in attempting to pit the abused against one another, than in demanding justice. This column makes all other pedophiles rub their hands in glee-they have found a new hero in Pat Hickey. Would you please write to the editor of the Montreal Gazette and demand that Pat Hicke be fired immediately.” — Theoren Fleury’s website
