MONTREAL, QC. — On Thursday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that free agent defenseman Ben Chiarot had been signed to a three-year contract with an average annual value of 3.5 million dollars.

The six-foot-three-inch, 219 pound left-handed defenseman had a career year last season in Winnipeg with five goals, 15 assists for 20 points with a plus-6 rating. He also had 62 penalty minutes in 78 games played.

“We are very happy to have come to an agreement with Ben Chiarot today. He is a very reliable defenseman and a solid player who will fill a need for our club. He is the type of player who can play some big minutes and be used in different situations,” Marc Bergevin said after signing the Hamilton, Ontario native.
