Habs News | Montreal Canadiens Sign Free Agent Defenceman Ben Chiarot to Three-year Contract, Played Last Season With Winnipeg Jets

MONTREAL, QC. — On Thursday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that free agent defenseman Ben Chiarot had been signed to a three-year contract with an average annual value of 3.5 million dollars.

The six-foot-three-inch, 219 pound left-handed defenseman had a career year last season in Winnipeg with five goals, 15 assists for 20 points with a plus-6 rating. He also had 62 penalty minutes in 78 games played.

“We are very happy to have come to an agreement with Ben Chiarot today. He is a very reliable defenseman and a solid player who will fill a need for our club. He is the type of player who can play some big minutes and be used in different situations,” Marc Bergevin said after signing the Hamilton, Ontario native.

In his career he has played a total of 305 NHL games recording 12 goals, 52 assists for 64 points adding 192 penalty minutes and a plus-16 differential.

Chiarot was drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in the fourth round, 120th overall, of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
