MONTREAL, QC. — On Monday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that defenceman Xavier Ouellet had been signed to a one-year, two-way contract.

The deal has a value of $700,000 at the NHL level and $300,000 at the AHL level with a guaranteed salary of $400,000 for the native of Bayonne, France.

Ouellet registered just three assists in 19 games for the Canadiens and was often a healthy scratch before before being placed on waivers on December 7th. After being unclaimed, the 25-year-old was assigned to the Rocket. In Laval, Ouellet finished the season with seven goals and 28 points in 47 games.

On February 12, Ouellet was named captain of the Rocket after team captain Byron Froese was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Ouellet has five goals and 21 assists for 26 points in 160 career NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings and the Canadiens.
