MONTREAL –Members of the media covering the Montreal Canadiens voted defenseman Roman Hamrlik as the 2010-11 recipient of the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy. The trophy is awarded annually to the member of the Canadiens who played a dominant role during the regular season, without earning any particular honor. Hamrlik, who ranked fifth in the standings in last year’s voting, succeeds Josh Gorges who earned the award in 2009-10.
Hamrlik received the most first-place votes in the race for the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy, for a total of 114 points in the overall standings, ahead of teammates Hal Gill (80 points) and Mathieu Darche (79 points).
A native of Zlin, Czech Republic, Hamrlik leads the Canadiens with a total of 1,696:36 minutes of play. He has averaged 22:29 minutes of ice time per game. He ranks second this season among Canadiens defensemen with a total of 129 shots on goal and a +6 plus-minus differential. Hamrlik has blocked 187 shots, first on the Canadiens and fourth in the NHL. He led all NHL defensemen in February with nine assists (0-9-9).
The 6’2’’, 212 lbs defenseman played his 1,300th NHL career game on March 17 against Tampa Bay, and recorded his 600th career point and his 150th career goal on December 1 against Edmonton. Hamrlik currently ranks fourth among active players with a total of 1,308 NHL regular season games.
Created in 1981 to honor the memory of the legendary sportswriter who spent most of his professional career covering the Canadiens, the Jacques Beauchamp-Molson Trophy was first awarded to Doug Jarvis following the 1981-82 season.
