► Bournival re-signed
- The Canadiens re-signed 23-year old forward Michael Bournival to a one-year, two-way contract extension worth $600,000. Bournival will need to pass through waivers if they want to send him to the AHL.
- Bournival, who was acquired from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for Ryan O’Byrne, had five points in 29 games with a plus-3 rating. He also spent time with the Bulldogs where he recorded nine points in 12 games. His season was ended prematurely after suffering a concussion in the NHL. He was said to have played multiple games with this concussion.
- He has 19 points in 89 career NHL games and will join the log jam of bottom six forwards carried by the Canadiens. The former Shawinigan Chataracte was given salary arbitration but the two sides could come to a deal before the hearing.
► Johnston gets a contract
- The Canadiens signed development camp invitee Ryan Johnston to a two-year two-way contract.
- The defenceman had 34 points in 75 games in his last two years in college and had a very notable season in the CCHL in 2011-12 when he had 71 points in 56 games. He followed up that performance with 18 points in 18 games with the Nepean Raiders.
- The right-handed shot defenceman will have an opportunity with the Ice Caps as defenceman Davis Drewiske and Bryan Allen were not retained.
- Johnston spent three years with the Sudbury Nickel Wolves in which he had 75 points in 97 games with an additional three assists in seven games in the Telus Cup. He had 33 career playoff points in 28 games along with 16 penalty minutes.
► Kostitsyns to stay in Russia, for now
- Andrei Kostitsyn, through his agent, had let it be know that he was interested in returning to hockey in North America. Reportedly, he was willing to sign a one-year deal with a low cap hit for a shot back in the NHL. The return has been put on hold for now.
- Andrei and his brother Sergei will be staying in Russia, signing two-year deals with Torpedo of the KHL. The elder brother has a player option on the second year of his contract so that he can again explore opportunities with the NHL next season.
- Andrei Kostitsyn, who was originally drafted 10th overall by the Habs in 2003, had 31 points in 37 games with Sochi HC after having eight points in 13 games with Chelyabinsk Traktor earlier the same season. His last NHL campaign was in 2011-12 with the Predators and the Habs when he had 36 points in 72 games.
- Sergei had 63 points in 103 games in his last two KHL season with Omsk Avangard and Kazan Ak-Bars respectively. His last stint in the NHL was in 2012-13 with the Nashville Predators when he had 15 points in 46 games. His best NHL season was in 2010-11 with the Predators when he had 23 goals and 50 points in77 games. The younger brother’s claim to fame was playing on one of the best CHL lines of all time comprised of himself, Sam Gagner and Patrick Kane. Sergei had 40 goals and 131 points in 59 games in that season.
► O’Reilly’s DUI
- Recently-acquired Buffalo Sabres forward Ryan O’Reilly was charged with a DUI Monday at 4:00 a.m. after crashing his green 1951 Chevrolet truck into a Tim Hortons in Lucan, Ontario.
- Buffalo Sabres GM Tim Murray had this to say on the incident involving one of his key offseason pickups: “We are aware of the reports regarding the incident involving Ryan O’Reilly last week. We are currently in the process of gathering more information and will have no further comment until we have spoken with all parties involved.”
- Along with being charged with driving impaired, O’Reilly was also charged with a failure to remain, as he fled the site of the crash after the incident.
- O’Reilly was signed to a 7-year $52.5 million contract by the Buffalo Sabres after being acquired for Mikhail Grigorenko, Nikita Zadorov, J.T. Compher and the 31st overall pick in this year’s draft (which was later dealt to San Jose).

► World Cup jersey ads set at $8 million
- According to Rick Westhead of TSN.ca, the NHL and NHLPA are asking for $8 million for the advertising rights to all eight teams in the tournament. In his piece Westhead spoke to one marketer who said “It’s just not going to happen.”
- It is believed that the advertisement would be more than just a patch on the team’s jersey, it would be integrated into the foundation of the jersey, to the chagrin of most hockey fans. Advertising on the jerseys of World Cup of Hockey teams could be the first step in a plan to put ads on NHL jerseys.
► Jersey swap
- Shortly after the Zack Kassian – Brandon Prust trade, the Canadiens announced that Kassian would wear No. 8 this upcoming season. It was Prust’s jersey number in Montreal. So it was only fitting that on Tuesday, the Vancouver Canucks announced that Prust will wear No. 9 for the Canucks, formerly worn by Kassian.

► Rangers sign Etem
- The New York Rangers have come to terms on a contract with restricted free agent forward Emerson Etem on a contract that will pay the 23-year old $850,000 for the next year. Etem was acquired on the second day of the draft in exchange for Carl Hagelin who was dealt due to his high contractual demands.
- Etem had 21 points in 22 games with the Ducks’ AHL affiliate the Milwaukee Admirals after having 54 points in 50 games with the Admirals the year before.
- In the NHL, Etem has 15 goals and 31 points in 115 games with the Ducks so far. He should get a long hard look in training camp especially with the departure of Martin St. Louis leaving a hole on the right wing. Etem was a former 61 goal scorer with the Medicine Hat Tigers, even more impressive is that he accomplished that feat in just 65 games.
► Cup in Sherbrooke
- Chicago Blackhawks goaltending coach Jimmy Waite brought the Stanley Cup to a hospital in his hometown of Sherbrooke on Tuesday. He signed autographs for children and posed for pictures with the Cup.
- Jimmy is the younger brother of Stephane Waite, goalie coach of the Canadiens.
- Carey Price and the Blackhawks’ Corey Crawford shared the Jennings Trophy this past season.
